For the past week after about 15 minutes of driving there is a strange whining/whirring noise coming from the engine between 1000-3000 revs when accelerating and again between 3000-1000 when de-celerating.

What could this possibly be, and is it something i need to worry about?

EDIT: Car has done 101k miles, anybody have any ideas?
