I've got my MY99ppp running on sti7 wheels with goodyear eagle F1 215/45 tyres and with 3 or more up it rubs on hard cornering or on big bumps. Its not really a major problem as most of the time its just me in the car but it is annoying having to drive carefully with 3 or more passengers. The arches have been rolled already and I don't want to remove the rubber strips on the arches as I am worried about the tyre rubbing directly onto metal (legitimate worry?). So my question is would Eibach springs remove the problem? I am thinking about getting them anyway for the handling improvement. As I understand it they wont compress as much as the standard springs under hard cornering so should help? Also should I get bumpsteer removed at the same time, I already run on prodrive geometry settings and am wondering if it is worth it?

 

AFAIK you should be running a 40 profile, not 45 with 17's on a classic.

Sorry Dibs you're wrong. The STi wheels are 7.5" wide compared with the "normal" sized 17" wheels which are 7" wide. Therefore to keep the same rolling circle you need that extra height in profile as there aren't any 225/40/17's available that I could find.
Scoobymoo. I run STi 8 wheels on my 93 WRX and they don't catch at all, I have STi6 suspension. I think that the Eibachs will add to the problem rather thn cure it as they will lower the car.

 

Run 215/40-17 tyres, they are the choice for a classic on 17". The problem will most likely be solved.

I could me wrong, but the wheel width shouldn't come into it (unless the offset is different and its rubbing the sidewall rather than tread). The profile relates to the aspect ratio of the tyre (height to width) so to match the OE rolling circumference the "correct" profile for a 17" wheel is 40 with a 215 width.

You need 215 40 tyres. Do not fit Eibachs as they lower the ride height pushing the wheel further into the arch to start with.

I borrowed some STI 7 wheels and with the Eibachs on mine they rubbed over every large bump with just me in the car

Where is the tyre rubbing in the arch?
You might have to just live with it till the tyres wear out

Thanks for your help, looks like I will just have to get the correct size tyre when these run out (they've got another 5000 miles at least) Dealer gave me the wheels when I bought the car (he'd just recieved one of the first sti7 demonstrators and had put 18s on it) and told me that they were the correct tyre size!

 

P1s were 205/45. Equivalent size is 215/40
