Question Removing StiV3 heads: some questions!

About halfway through taking all the pipes/wires and much more off the engine ready to pull it out on saturday.
The aim is to change the head gaskets.
Those who have done this:
1 Have you found the gaskets only to have perished?
2 Additionally, has the head surface been damaged needing a skim of the heads?
3 If skimmed, is it a difficult job to reshim the tappets a corresponding amount to compensate for the head skim?
4 Where can I get a picture of the torque sequence for the heads from?(and what value).

Hope you can help.
My alternative is to wimp out and give the loose engine to API to do it all and I'll try to remember where all the bits go back.....

you dont need to reshim the valves for a head skim..

it would be worth checking clearances though.

While you are doing this it is also well worth doing the following:

oil stem seals
checking valves are true
light grind & polish of valves
recut valve seats

or at least get them inspected, too many get warped etc.

Spoke to API David today, and have a plan. Going to beef it up a bit ready for Xmas 'tune-up', those bloody EVO's and Nissans are getting to me (hill climbing, not road racing).
What a bloody messy job it is, makes my 911 seem like childs play...I can get it out, re-clutched and back in in 5 hours max.

David! Have you got it in for us 911 pilots? Doing this bloody Subaru engine in a home garage is really different to your palacial 4 post ramps, air tools, armour plated knuckles, oh, and you have done it before!
Just HOW MANY pipes are there on these motors? Putting it back will be challenging....
Anyway, have a look above at my (daft?) question as to the turbo being the culprit for my problems, silly theory?

Remember, real Porsches are AIR COOLED!

Expensive tastes!
Us mortals live with the 3.2 litre injected flat 6 in a 980Kg early 911. who needs 4x4 in the dry when you have a 911.
Anyway, I'm accused of being a poser, a slow mechanic, and assumed to be rich, cant be as I have a bloody Stiv3 that is only marginally faster hill climbing than the 911 and keeps on breaking!
Mind you it isn't rusty.
Mr Wallis, can you answer my other thread please on the idea my head gaskets havn't gone but could be the Turbo body cracked? Or is it wishful thinking....or stupid also.

Probably wishfull thinking.

If the turbo was cracked inside, you would get coolant running into the intake and out the exhaust (via the engine).

I hope Im wrong.

btw my bro's got a 911 3.2 (old lhd sc model).
I agree, the aircooled engine is the real shjt.

Drove a factory prepared rally Porsche once a few years ago - it was a good drive except that some loon thought it was a good idea to put a spare engine in the boot which made it very tail happy. Thought I'd take it out to see if it went properly but the engine seemed to be connected to something [ probably to stop it flapping about when cornering ] so I left it in there.

Don't think it will be the turbo, possible of course, but on a scale of 1 - 10 probably 3.
