just bought a 'n' plate wrx its got just over 70000km on it, the guy mentioned the cambelt may need doing, is this right?

45000 miles and 90000 miles, or since you don't know history, get a full service with all fluids and belts just to be sure .. costs a bit though!
Go for the STi belt, it's tougher!

 

Here in Switzerland it's every 100,000 km or 60,000 miles.

 

The belt change mileage went from 45K to 60K miles about 18 months ago I think. Don't know if the belt itself changed in makeup though.

When you think of the cost of repairing all those bent valves and damaged pistons etc. I would not think twice about getting the belt changed right now. Worthwhile getting the front crankshaft oil seal changed at the same time-not expensive but better to do it now than later. Make sure they fit a genuine Subaru or a Gates belt. Don't accept one of those cheap ones that are available.
