What benefits would you see by removing the fuel filter?
I ask this as when I imported my Legacy the fuel filter has been removed and I'm not sure why?

No benefits whatsoever, just an increased likelihood of your injectors becoming fouled by crap from the bottom of the tank.

When you say the filter has been removed, what's happened, it's been bypassed by a straight piece of fuel pipe or wot?

Are you sure that a third party filter hasn't been fitted elsewhere in the line? That's the only obvious explanation I can think of for bypassing the OE one.

 

I haven't checked to see if it's been relocated but I will later.

Yea there is a piece of steel tubing in place of the fuel filter?

Perhaps the fuel filter was giving problems & instead of replacing just inserted the steel tube like tight *****.
As greasemonkey says if it has not been relocated , put another in Asap

Hmmm....after a bit of research it turns out that the filter is located in the fuel tank in the B4's - Don't know why!

Yes, your car does (well, should!) have a fuel filter RR. It's a canister about three inches in diameter, clipped to the left hand (i.e. passenger side) front suspension turret and with two pipes sprouting out the top which are connected into the fuel lines.

Normal replacement interval is every two years or 24,000 miles, but I normally do them a bit more often than that, around every eighteen months or 18K.

I'll look into changing mine. The cars has covered 20k since i have owned it, and i can't find any record of it being changed in the history.
