There's a chance I'll be changing jobs within my company, with the "perk" of a company car included. It's Hobson's choice: Astra, Vectra, Xsara or Xantia - all diesel. I would get to choose the colour. Which would you choose?

Vectra TDi

Does the job surprisingly well. Reasonable inside. More space than an Astra.

Got a 97 GLS as my commuting car. 50mpg even at 90 & reasonable poke.

Keep the fun for the scoob

I'd second that through experience. Usually well equipped and designed for cruising all day long, though the seats are pants.

No chance of a Golf? Got some tasty looking TDis in our company car park.

Otherwise - the Vectra!

Dunno if you can but take the car allowance.
you can claim money back from the govt on the petrol you use, the cost of the finance for the car and you don't get hammered on company car tax.

I had the choice between Vectra 2.5,BMW323
Merc C class or Saab 9-3. I did'nt fancy any of them, took the money and got a scoob instead.

Of course if you are doing tens of thousands
of miles per year it you will lose out due to
depreciation etc so the car may be a better option. But for those who do <15K miles a year it's money everytime. I'd go for the Astra at a pinch, but it would have to be the kind of pinch Mike Tyson would give you..

Didn't Jeremy Claxman explain that a Vectra was a nasty rash you got when you bought a Vauxhall?

anything but a Vectra surely , widely criticised in all knowledgable mags as absolute pants to drive !!!!!! by the same wisdom I'd have the Astra ,suposed to be virtualy as good as a Focus if a touch dull to look at , can't see any reason to choose a Vectra over an Astra unless you need absolute space or want to tow a caravan , even then it's a close call . Xara is good but dull , Xantia fantastic but very very old and due for the chop soon
