Default Any Thoughts On Running In?

After 6 years of blown scoobs, I have now said a tearfull goodbye to my 03 WRX and am now the prowd owner of a Legacy 3.0RN, and wow what a classy bit of kit it is.

Anyway, the manual states that running in should be 1000 miles at no more than 4000rpm, then drop the oil and bobs your uncle, however I have been told by the supplying dealer that new cars and that includes the impreza don't need to be run in and if you drive it slow to start, it will allways be slow, this is a policy that has been adopted by several of the mainstream manufactuers, but is it true of the 4 or 6 cylinder boxer units.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sorry your dealer is incorrect ALL Impreza's are included in 1K mile running in and Till first service is completed. Also don't keep it at a constant 4Krpm modulate the throttle

IMHO

People only tell you that engines don't need running in for convenience's sake. No one likes the restrictions involved in doing it.

There is no way that the bearing surfaces and cylinder bores and pistons can get a good polish on them from machining processes. The only way to do that is to use the engine gently in the first place, especially using the runnning in oil in the Subaru engine. As the polishing is achieved the enngine will run more smoothly and less frictional heat will be generated. At the full recommended distance you can be confident that all is well to use the performance after the oil change. You will have the satisfaction that your engine will be in top form and will last a lot longer too.

Absolute nonsense to say that it will be a slow engine if you do run it in properly. Subaru would not recommend it if they did not feel it was necessary either!

6 pot,

Just had a new motor fitted into my impreza, the garage has told me not over 3000 rpm for the first 500 miles. Then an oil change and then another 500 at 4000 rpm.

Red.
