Question :should I get an ECU upgrade before down pipe or is it ok to run with booster as long as Knocklink shows no activity?
Ideally would like Scoobyecu ?? but have read a few negative stories on here
If you recommend ECU who do I contact???

Didn't think there were any problems with the ScoobyECU, except that it's not as easy to get hold of as it once was?
After fitting the DP, wopping in plenty of booster should do most of the trick, but it may be an idea to not drive like a nutter until the ECU is mapped correctly as it could be running lean - no quantity of booster can cope with that! If it were me, I'd also keep an eye on EGTs, but they can be pretty expensive gauges... I'm sure you've read all about the KLs, but make sure it's got its own sensor & it turned up to max sensitivity!

 

Z4 ECU should be fine with the above mods.
I wouldn't expect to see any knocklink activity if running standard boost.

Isn't the Z4 mappable, i.e. who knows what it was mapped to?
See what the AFR/KL says, I suppose
Might be an idea to use some det cans too, just to make sure the KL/ECU is actually hearing the know, seeming you have non-standard headers (can 'confuse' the sensors).

 

With a ScoobyECU or a 27C1028 chip it is.
Both will fit into the spare socket on the ECU main board.

Z4 Base map is the best stock WRX map available.
Runs 12.7psi and uses the same (as near as damn it) Ignition and fuel maps as the UK Prodrive (Pre96) ECU.

Can you tell me more about the 27C1028 chip, keep it simple as I'm thick! are both the scoobyecu and the chip more or less plug in and go?

The 27C1028 chip is the device intended to provide the alternative map.
However this chip went obsolete in the mid 90's, hence why the ScoobyECU was produced.

The end result being the same.

The ScoobyECU basically uses two 8-bit chips to emulate the 16-bit 27C1028.

The data intended for the 27C1028 is split accross the 2 8-bit devices, but when read back due to the tracking on the ScoobyECU, it looks like a single 16-bit device.

There are various ScoobyECU adaptors on the market, but most are in Japan or Aus. However the ScoobyECU 'was' the only one readily adailable in the UK.
It was developed for use on the Impreza and Legacy by Pavlo (Paul Blamire), David Wallis and Myself.

Although due to supply issues I switched to using the 27C1028 which I managed to source a limited number of. However trying to maintain this as a hobby (which it was for all 3 of us) proved to much, along with the complicated supply of materials. So I knocked it on the head.

Your only hope is to keep in touch with Pavlo or David and hope they get supply of ScoobyECU board from the PCB supplier soon.

I'm finding it impossible to even get prices and availability. I've tried emailing scoobyecu and also adding onto a thread to get David W's attention, but no joy.
Are there any alternatives, because there must be easier ways to part with my money than chasing suppliers.
