Definately too thin for a turbo charged scoob, if its a sport on the other hand then its ok

Being a bloater I get though a lot of chips so it makes sense to use whats available. Not sure on the grade as this all depends on the type of fryable material that has been imersed in the oil. I find that oil used to fry haddock tends to have the right properties for a scoob, not too keen on oil used for cooking sausages as it makes it run like a pig.
You will need to drain it to remove the bits of food left behind as this will kill your bearings instantly, but other than that, no problems yet and 29.9 miles covered.
directions for use:
Change every 30 miles for longevity.
Order new engine and turbo every 30 miles.
Never use again to fry food, unless its for the mother-in-law.
Dont bother with an oil filter, it makes no difference.
Dispose of in an environmentally frindly way.
No flaming, I was bored!!!

Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w/50 , Motul 300V 15w/50 or Castrol RS 10w/60 would be fine.

I think changing oil in short periods is better than using expensive oils if you're not rallying on the road. Fuji Ind. suggests 10-40 so why do I use 10w-60 syntcs? I also consider about the condition of roads since we have tidy and dusty roads in Turkey

I would have thought 0W40 Fully Sythentic would be fine actually!
0W40 is no "thinner" than 10W40 from what I've heard from someone with serious knowhow about engine oils (the guy is a chemical engineer with experience in analysing oils!)
In his words, the lower value in viscosity ratings simply means in what conditions (temp) the oil starts to work. So the lower it is, the colder the environment it can start to work. The latter number means the upper temp the oil can work upto.
So, 0W40 and 10W40 both can work upto the same required upper temp level for it to have a 40 viscosity. The 0W one simply starts working at lower temps. 80% of engine wear is done at start ups. So if you do lots of them (short journeys for example) then 0W40 would be adviseable.
Fair enough, if you constantly rag your car to the limits, then you will need a thicker oil like 5W50 or 10W50 or 10W60 even to protect the engine at the upper temp range.
But otherwise, for normal everyday driving, 0W40 is ok!
Just my view of course (and I'm prepared to be flamed on this one!)

Harvey: I admire your persistence. These days after I state the facts as I know them to be, usually learned or confirmed from hard and sometimes expensive experience, I tend to leave it to the "experts" who know far more than those of us who have actually done it.

I suggest you do a bit of reading about the viscosities / codings of oil. 0W is too thin for a scoob, you can actually hear it sound worse.
Ron - Scoobmania will get you Motul, but I suggest you go for Castrol 10W60 from Castrolclassicoils.co.uk Its cheaper, and gives a better performance from trials ive seen.

Castrol RS 10w 60. I have 43,000 miles on a STi7 305 ps 317lb drive regularly in Germany between 100 and 120. Runs great, doesn't burn a drop between oil changes. DO NOT USE 0w 30, 0w 40 or 5w 30, 5w 40. That's just my opinion.

I will put my hand up and say i really don't know a lot about the correct oil to use in a Subaru.
Have only had the car for 9 months. 10k service is due.
The only info i've had is what i've read on this and another forum.
Does anyone have a link to a decent website that explains oil viscosities etc??
I just don't get it when a lot of people on here say don't put anything 5W or 0W in the Subaru engine. The manual for my UK STI says 5w30 for instance, and an alternative is 10w40.
One dealer i've spoken to said they will use 5w30 if i go there for servicing (BP stuff)
Another has said they will use Shell Helix ultra, with is Fully sythentic 5w40.
The ex dealer i got my car from, put Shell Helix Plus in at the 1k mile mark, which is a semi synth 10w40.
Sooo many different options, just on the dealer side alone.
RCM says they recommend Silkolene 15w50 Semi Synth.
At the end of day, I'm just trying to learn about Subaru ownership.
Forums are a good way to do this (so I thought), but hey I guess I may have to learn the hard way or trust the dealers.
