Default Rally car chatter

I was just wondering, when you hear rally cars go past they are always chattering.

What exactly makes that noise and can you get your normal impreza to do that?

It’s usually the waste gate that chatters….

Take off your DV and blank it. It will sound very nice for a while, just before your turbo bearings disintegrate

...depending on whether you're running a TD or VF series turbo

Has anyone run without DV for any length of time on a VF28 or VF34? Do they last longer the VF23 does?

Thanks, Richard

DBM has the correct answer. No dump valve. If the search worked you could find a VERY long thread on this about 12 months ago.

i had my VF turbo chattering and it blew up, replaced it with a tdo4 as a stop gap and its been chattering for about 2/3months now and running 1.35 bar peak boost

adjustable recird dump valve is set to max stiff ness so it will actualy recird the preasure on full throttle changes etc etc

round town and stuff it chatters away spot on

I kept destroying MAFS when mine was chattering with the TD04, so i got rid of it (the MAF that is , and the TD04 but that's not the point).

I too like the noise and the feel but i'm a bit hesitant for fear of blowing the compressor blades into the intercooler. Although the TD04, 05 turbos and sleeve bearings i hear they spin at a bit higher speed than the likes of the garret turbos. I therfor don't like to run my own car with the DV blanked (although it was the intention).

Dave
Plus it doesn't sound as nice as a chattering cosworth which is a bit upsetting

IIRC it's not the compressor blades that are a problem (they're pretty strong), but you need a turbo with angular contact bearings to take the thrust force.

I know the TD05 as a 360deg thrust bearing, and i have seen the mess after the blades go chasing the air downt the inlet tract

Hmmm, sounds as if this might not be a very good idea. Don't want the car blowing up or anything like that
