Question Gearlinkage play

Just purcased a JDM 2001 Sti version 7 with 30,000 miles on the clock but the gearbox has a lot of play in every gear, i.e side to side. Is this a common problem ? it looks like there may be a linkage problem maybe a worn joint ?

Help please !!

thanx in advance.

Hi,I think you mean gear shift stick lots of play, side to side. There is a universal joint in the linkage with some useless rubber bushing which worn out easily.I replaced mine and within a year back to square one.A mechanic at the dealer adviced me to bring my old universal joint to a machine shop and get them to machine bushing from a solid plastic material.I did what he adviced me to and now very little play.
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys,

After further investigation, it does appear to be this universal joint down at the gear box. I am going to have it stripped this morning and see what i an do with that assembly. dont suppose you still have the dimensions of your "fabricated one" ?

Kev.
