Question

Hi petrol heads, I have a modified 97MY and I am in the last stages of it's development. In my endeavour to get more advance out of my LINK, I have just bought an STiV/ P1 intercooler with all the necessary plumbing including alu Y-Piece etc and BOV (don't want the FMIC route). It was my understanding that the BOV cannot be used on my CAR, is that correct? or can I modify to match/suit?
I was under the impression that I would have to order an 90deg elbow flanged part from MRT but would then be tempted to upgrade to a FORGE BOV. Is the STiV/P1 BOV as good as a FORGE and is it better than my 97MY one????

Sorry for so many questions chaps. JACKO.

Are you planning on selling the original inter cooler? I might be interested.

I am not sure anyone has done this mod because apart from the colour there is no difference between the two intercoolers?

Pre MY97 the intercooler was smaller. At MY97 a larger intercooler was introduced.
MY99/00 the BOV was directly mounted to the intercooler.

Difference between STi and std intercooler is the colour of the paint.

There IS a difference on the MY01 WRX and MY01 STi.

Hi Steve, the UK 97MY and the STi4 intercooler efficiencies are supposedly the same but the UK 97MY is Black and the STi4 is Silver, both with remotely located BOV's.
The UK 98/99/00 and the STi5 & 6 are also similar in there efficiencies but are also Black for UK and Silver for STi and both with BOV attached.
I have a 97MY intercooler fitted at the moment, but wish to fit the STi5 one. The reason for doing this is that there will be a dramatic increase in intercooler efficiency gained, but my question is can I use the STi5 BOV, does it fit OK? and if not what modification will I have to do to enable fitment? i.e. take BOV off and fit a flanged piece of 90deg pipe to mate up to my old 97MY BOV and chuck the STi5 BOV away.....

Jacko.

I think you'll find the 97 & 98 UK intercoolers are the same.

The larger/more efficient type with the attached BOV arrived in 99 and with the STi V.

Yes, and he's asking about fitting an STi V one in place of his MY97 UK one, so your point is....?

Hello Jacko,

I quite understand what you are talking about because I want to carry out the same modification.
As you have already mentioned the Ver 5 and 6 TMIC is better than the Ver 3 and 4. The problem is that if you fit the new TMIC into your engine bay you'll find out that it doesn't fit cause the BOV is too close to the ISC (idle speed controller). So probably the best thing to do is to custom make an adaptor to fit the BOV in another position. And possibly it would be better to use an aftermarket BOV like the Forge one.

Carlos, thanks for the email. I have already been in contact with a supplier over here to get one of these adapters made up for about he same price as MRT approx. £20. In the future, I think I will invest in a RE-circ Forge BOV.

Thanks for your input guys. Jacko

Cool

Jacko,

If you have already carried out the conversion can you take some pictures of it, and keep us informed on the results ..... ?

(still haven't got the time to do it myself)

Well all you people might be pleased to know that I have eventually fitted the P1/STi5 intercooler!
It wasn't easy and required a unique one off BOV flanged pipe made by a very well known fabrication company and shifting the BOV hole a little on the intercooler.
It still requires some finessing but all works OK and can't wait for my next remap...

Once I have acquired a decent water tank, I'm going to have to get that water spray installed.

I also fitted an APS BOV whilst I was at it. Nice piece of kit and thanks Craig@NAM!!!

Jacko

I have a water tank, a Forge one with all the necessary bits, with the sti squirters and the Link spray module, and water pump, etc

Yours for £250 (cost me over £600) - but I have gone down the fmic route and dont really want to then add spray and injection to it
