Question

Ok,

I've currently got a Magnex system and HKS SuperPowerFlow Induction for breathing. Fitted boost gauge and turbo-timer for safety. (And Eibachs with 17" for looks )

At the moment I'm seeing 11-12psi on boost dropping to 9-10psi on an MY98 (don't know if this is good or not). Will perform an ECU reset at the weekend as I've been running Optimax for 1000 miles now.

Am thinking about a boost controller (HKS) or an ECU upgrade (2nd hand PPP or Unichip maybe). My feeling is ECU first then boost controller.

Is this a good idea?

I am on a limited budget with a house and family to run so possum-link etc are out of the question.

Thanks

Laurence
PS If you have a 2nd hand ECU to sell let me know.

Laurence, depending on the ecu that you fit, you might not require a boost controller. To my knowledge the only ecu that will require a controller will be the unichip. Link, motec and the like control boost very well.

Dan

PS. What year car do you have?

Laurence,

Have heard a lot of good things about Apexi boost and fuel controllers - so much so, that I am hopefully going to get them fitted to my 99 next year.

So I would say get a boost controller and not a Unichip just MHO.

Laurence,

A cheap-ish modification that might need doing is silicon intercooler pipework.

The standard items have been known to split at above standard boost, so £50-60 for a Samco option seems like money well spent!

I've also heard it's a good idea to run Iridium spark plugs as well.

If you get a PPP ECU, you won't need a boost controller (unless you want to push it outside of it's working parameters!).

If you get a Unichip, it is worth getting it fitted with a boost controller at the same time, to save you having it mapped again later. The Unichip can be run with a bleed valve, but it will require you get under the bonnet and tinker!

The Unichip only controllers fuelling and ignition timing, so the boost will need to be controlled by either the bleed valve or a boost controller.

Don't bother running a PPP ECU with a boost controller! I was getting similar power when using the boost controller with either the PPP or the standard ECU!

If you want to chat about these options, you have my number!

Andy
