For those who have a MY99 PPP, what is the best/worst thing about it ?

Not always bolt on and forget in my experience with slight overboost problems - esp after DP in the cold. But now sorted

Pete, only downside is price. If you are prepared to run around the country and get this bit and that bit fitted, kissing goodbye to your warranty at the same time, you can probably get more power per £. The PPP is a great bolt-on-and-forget mod.

John, agreed. I meant that the standard PPP was bolt-on-and-forget. But when you add other things, as you and I have done, that can change.

What over-boost problems have you had, and how did you overcome them? I don't have any gauges (yet) to warn me.

Original PPP on 1.2mm restrictor was hitting 19PSI peak at about 3200rpm in 4th gear, then wavering around between 14 and 19PSI held. On 1.3mm restrictor this went to 17-18PSI peak, 16PSI held smoothly. Then add downpipe and K&N, and the boost overshot and fluttered again. Now on "about" 1.35mm restrictor (after drilling and filing) and get about 17.5PSI peak, 16.5PSI held with no fluttering/overshoot, but bucket loads of smooth torque, with hopefully enough margin to get me through the winter and then Optimax when it comes out here. Set of 1.2,1,3,1.35,1.4 drill bits awaited. Also trying to source a suitable adjustable valve restrictor type thingie - NOT a bleed valve - I don't want to vent it - without success so far.

The restrictors adjust the peak boost only unless you have too little restriction and then they limit the held as well

If you have too much restriction then the boost wavers around all over the place. It feels good on spool up and then very disappointing as the car pulls back and the torque goes through the floor.

There are subtle variants where you are sure the car is not pulling right - if it hits overboost, in my experience it can be just a strange subjective feeling to the power delivery which just doesn't feel quite right. Difficult to tell without a boost gauge.

Funny that 12PSI can get to feel normal after a while, until you go back to 17.5/16.5 and you suddenly realise what you were missing. Only a tiny alteration in the calibre of these restrictors can take you from 12PSI peak to 20PSI peak. Worth getting a gauge so you know you are running optimum.

 

Thanks, John. I've been pondering a whole cockpit full of gauges recently. But with cold weather almost here, I'll stick a decent boost gauge in there now.
