Question

Cheers,

A workshop nearby claims that Prodrive have three different ECUs (or PPP) for the MY99 (240, 260 and 280 hp). Of course they are also claiming to be the only firm in Portugal able to import and install them...

Is this true, or am I being ripped off?

And nobody wants crap managing the engine, right?

Now, seriously, can anybody from Prodrive comment this?

I think if there were 260 and 280bhp versions I would have found out and got one of them instead of the 240PS/237bhp version I got! I scoured the net and Scoobynet/IWOC for info on this package, so I would be extremely surprised to see such a package in existence and not well documented. I think they are trying to deceive you. I can't see Prodrive easily being able to safely unlock 280bhp from a MY99 whilst maintaining warranty and legal emissions. They only just managed 276bhp from the P1! Even the folk that get Unichips/Links and decatted exhausts and map for super unleaded on MY99/00 seem to only get about this with some notable exceptions where they start getting the headers done, new turbos and front mounted intercoolers etc etc.

Some with PPP and decat and induction have got up to 270-287bhp on "optimistic" rollers, whereas the standard car shows about 230bhp and the PPP around 250bhp. I think Mike Wood from Prodrive once said that the official figures were done on engine dynos with new engines, so when run in there could be more.

Thanks for all your replies.

Just for the record, the figures given to me were PS instead of bhp (not that it makes a huge difference...).

Anyway, I'd better stay away from this firm.

John, how is the PD ECU? Any regrets (considering other options, like Motec or Link)?

Considered Link and Unichip and settled for PPP. Reasons - resale value, superb torque delivery, noise, idle control, warranty, local fitting - the latter being a large part of it being in Scotland. Couldn't really take an easy trip back to BRD or Powerstation to sort things out. Added a DP & induction since - so invalidated warranty anyway. But PPP would anyway for year 2 and 3 of my Belgian warranty. I hope I am getting somewhere in the region of 265-270bhp, but what matters is that it drives INCREDIBLY well, with absolutely monster torque from 3000rpm.

Thanks for your comments John (yet again!)

Just to close this topic, the workshop in question has told me today that Prodrive do not make the 280PS / 260PS chips anymore due to major engine failures detected on some customers cars... very strange has according to our previous conversation, Prodrive were making them about two months ago.
Well, I'll scrap this workshop from the list for obvious reasons...

Now, on with the quest for monster torque!
