McRae won but only after Sainz (who was 2 minutes in front) deliberately stopped for 2 minutes before the finish line.

Team orders, I suppose.

Isn't that effectively what Cortauld and Hakkinen did and didn't they get in trouble and told it wouldn't be tolerated again... i know it's F1 but all the same....

Also a nightmare for the bookies...

Come on guys, Ford won fair and square. Team orders were imposed before the start of day three with McRae leading and Sainz second and Kankunnen about a month behind.

McRae subsequently backed off to follow team orders of not racing each other, Sainz went quicker and thus 'accidentally' overtook Colin. Sainz then did the gentlemqanly thing and pulled over 50 mtrs from end of last stage to allow CM to take victory.

I don't think this is quite the same as Coulthard/hakinen but hey that professional sponsor driven motorsport for you.
