Looking in to the engine bay from the front bumper, it is to the right under side of the inter-cooler.

You will have a black pipe coming out of the inter-cooler going down towards the engine, at the end of this pipe is the dump valve.

You almost sound like you know what you are talking about

Chris (and I promise to mention absolutely nothing about power stations...)

The solution is you go to your dealer and they fit a new one in about 10 minutes.Mine was under warranty so didnt cost anything.
When mine went on my 97, didnt notice any difference in performance, only the noise (a sort of groaning) at about 80 when coming on and off boost.I took a young mechanic out with me to demonstrate, but he was too terrified to notice the noise. He decided just to agree with me, so he could get out quicker!
You could always fit an aftermarket dump valve but that is a totally different proposition and has pros and cons.

Hi Beastie

Thanks for your reply.
Did yours make the noise intermittently ??
I think it's the dump Valve. Can't be sure though.
Mine makes a noise sometimes coming on boost and doesn't go away.
Other times there is no noise.

Lads

what is the solution to the following problem, will it affect the engine power and boost if it is faulty :

Cheers

Gary

;****************************

Dump Valves (aka Blow off Valves and By-pass Valves)
There seems to be a recognised problem with the 1997 specification car's dump valve. This does not shut properly under boost and thus vibrates giving the sound similar to someone blowing across the top of an open bottle. It has also been likened to a steam train whistle or ship fog horn in extreme circumstances!. Meanwhile the 1998 model seems to have a totally revamped and larger blow off system, but I have had reports that the problem sometimes still occurs.

Unhappy

Mine also makes the noise intermittently.

The noise drove me mad during last weeks holiday (2hr motorway drive @ 80ish was especially bad, just past 3000rpm) so finally decided to get it fixed.

Got home and now its stopped..

Hi Rich

Mine did exactly the same thing last week on holiday. It did my head in for days and then it went away and now it is back again !!!!
I think I will take it to a my Subaru dealer tomorrow because it has a warranty with the car.

Cheers
