Clutch judder! (they all do it sir!)

Question

Hi everyone! i have a MY00 and its 23000 miles, when its cold i get this anoying clutch judder through the pedal, feels like its slipping for a brief moment then sets off. it started at 15000 miles, once warm its o.k, my main dealer says its normal they do that, they are a performance car, if that was so it would of done it from new? bmw M3 does not do it and thats a performance car are they bullsh!ting me? i dont ride on the clutch or any "max power" offs. thanks for help as i need some honesty! Lee

It's documented in the SIDC FAQ that this is a common problem for WRXs of all MY's. To me, that's a manufacturing defect. My 4-puck AP clutch judders all the time, but that's only because of its design. This shouldn't be happening on a standard factory clutch.

Lee,

Mine started doing it at 14k. I don't except that they all do it, as the dealers now replace the bell housing with one from a P1.

Get down the dealer and kick off, saying you want it fixed on warranty. Don't accept no for an answer!!

A quick fix is to rev upto 4 to 5k and dump the clutch, smoking away from some lights. It will come back though.

Chheers matey, no boody mention of P1 housing at my dealer, did tey put that in f.o.c?i had read this somewhere. standard cars just shouldnt do it shuld they. i will give them a ring. where did you get yours done at? cheers Lee.

Lee,

I haven't booked it into my local dealers (Tileys of Bristol) but will be doing it soon. No they shouldn't do it. After the P1 housing has been fitted it should be ok. And yes it should be F.O.C. I'm not paying to have mine done. Not my problem!!!

Just had the clutch replaced under warranty on my P1 at 18,000 miles.

It had started to judder from cold.

Most of those miles are motorway, but it is amazing how much better the new one feels.

cheers russ, these clutches must be a weak spot, im not really rough o it either, previous car had done 180000 miles never needed touching, i will get it sorted, just bit worrying when the warranty runs out, supose i will of bought sumat else by then. i will let you know babber. Lee

My dealer told me that they've stopped authorising the P1 housing fix 'cos they're running out of P1 housings....

Had mine fixed under warranty including new flywheel and bell housing. MY99 with approx 28k miles. They will check to ensure that the juddering is not due to excessive wear, and this means that they need to take the clutch out - somehting like 3.5 hours work which you will have to pay for if the friction lining is too thin. So if you're sure you haven't abused it, go for it, otherwise you're taking a gamble that they will/won't replace it.

Just booked mine in today to have a P1 clutch houseing. Its done 20k Clutch judder from about 10k. Lacaster in Pangboarne told me that if the cars done under 20k then Im will normally authorise a straight replacement P1 houseing. If it's done over 20k then they ask the Dealer to strip the clutch and look for signs of misuse. Lacaster phoned up IM today and got the all clear just to change it. No talk of a shortage of Houseings. Booked in for the 20th.

It does seem to depend on the dealer you use. I hear that Cheam motors are great, and also Lancaster in Pangboarne are excellent as well.
