Can anyone tell me how difficult it is to achieve 300bhp on this turbo and whats necessary?

I'd say it'll take a miracle. I do know about a certain Ecutek fella that had it "Done".

I'd say push it as hard as you dare to, and go to a place like Well Lane and have it dynoed - whatever you do - don't go to Powerstation afterwards.

What I'm saying is that in the old days you couldn't get more than 260-ish from a TD04, no matter what you did...

Tuppenneth and all that.

If 300 real horsies are on order - get one of the VF's or an old TD05.

Record on a TD04, to my knowledge, is 312bhp at Power Engineering. That is with a bugeye TD04, the new age turbo holds boost at the top end noticeably better than the classic version of the turbo apparently.

 

Alot will depend on which compressor your TD04 has. 09B or 13G...?

When someone shows a dyno print of 300 from a stock Impreza TD04 from say Powerstation...then I'll believe it.
300 at Well Lane, or even at Power Engineering doesn't cut it.

As has been suggested above, if your goal is 300 real, usable horsepower rather than just a rolling road printout you can put up on your wall and have a w*nk over, cut your losses, save a lot of time and p*ssing about and get a TD05 or a VF34/35.

I have a TD04L hybrid turbo on my UK00 car. £500 exchange unit from Mark at Lateral Performance. Although I have a few other mods now (like big TMIC) I think it was capable of close to 300bhp when mated to just a decat exhaust and ITG panel filter on the induction side. After an EcuTek-3 remap (John Banks) it made the old PPP set up feel limp.

I think it's a great little turbo with no detectable compromise at the bootom end, but just pulls harder and longer at the top

ill tell you what

i "cabbaged" my vf22 a few months back and had to fit a td04 as a stop gap to keep me on the road

with the vf 22 i pulled 281bhp and 259lbft at well lane for the tyne tees scoobies shootout
this was @ 1.05 bar boost

sadley due to me not getting my **** into gear i wont have my replacement turbo fitted intim for the next rolling road day, which i think is under 2 months away, so im intending to run the td04 as it is

@ the moment its pulling just over 1.3bar and tailing off as the revs rise, i shall report back on my findings when they happen, i am expecting a nice increase in mid range torque, i am not so sure on the bhp front lol

not really a issue as i have plans for a nice andy f spec monster (once i pay off sum more debts )

 

300 bhp is quite possible but you need to have the supporting mods in place and done properly for the TD04 to perform that well. Easy with a TD05.

Your ideal set of supporting mods, IMHO:

Full exhaust (inc up-pipe). Ideally headers (ported OEM or small size others). Fuel pump and regulator. Samco or similar intercooler and induction hoses. Uprated intercooler (large, low pressure drop top mount for TD04, FMIC for bigger turbos). Ideally 3 port boost solenoid, decent custom map. Possibly suitable Cold Air induction kit.

The person who made 312bhp at PE, IIRC had APS TMIC, full exhaust (GGR, with sports cat fitted), fuel pump/regulator, some samco hoses, and a custom map, can't remember if he had an uprated panel or cold air. With headers etc, should be feasible to beat him by a little (At that level, I think it has to be the bugeye version of the turbo, though) Uprated TMIC made a big difference in his case, as it drops about 2psi less than the standard, and with a TD04, you don't have top end boost to spare.

Of course, this is just my opinions. If Harvey suggests otherwise, worth noting that he has taken tuning the 2 litre a lot further than I (or 99.99% of scooby owners) ever will, and got some truly top class results.
