Thumbs down

Anyone know of a fault with Impreza 5th gear snchromeshes, I have a crunching 5th gear problem and heard that Subaru had become aware of a fault in 5th gear synchros and had issued a "fix kit" to be held to solve any problems that may arise. My 99 Impreza Sport has developed this problem and I have to pay the bill, but was Subaru aware the problem was there, and if so when? hence the design change.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, in order for me to get some goodwill from Subaru regards free issue "fix kit" parts.

Regards,

Graham.

i think you mean the nut on the end of the shaft which holds 5th gear on. it did come loose on turbos but i've never done a sport. and it didn't make it crunch it sort of fell out of gear.

What oil are you using in the box? I tried fully synthetic gear oil but this made 5th gear crunch when changing at fairly high speeds. I have changed to Castrol Syntrax and this has effected a cure, even at 5000+ r.p.m. 4th to 5th

Subaru gearboxes brake teeth off second gear and shear teeth off fifth gear. The problem you explain is very common, across leagcy's and Impreza's of any year 1998 and on are slightly better, they use a twin baulk ring setup on 1&2 and 3&4 which also helps the changing into 5th. The fix kit for the synchros has less fingers on the synchro's.
