Tony, they're not recommended at all.
Doesn't stop KT Green from putting them in... When I found out that they were not recommended, they made a note of my reg number and promptly overcharged me for the next service, presumably for being a trouble maker.
As my car is out of warranty, I've just fitted a K&N 57i kit

I've just managed to track down the part number of the K&N replacement filter for my 94 Legacy and since the price difference between that and the 57i is only about 40 quid, I was wondering . . . Don't suppose anybody knows if the MAF sensor fittings are the same on the Impreza's and older Legacy's ?
If they are, then in theory the 57i should fit straight on. Or am I missing something ?

No replacement part is acceptable in Subaru's eyes now. If they find an ITG filter, they'll tell you to remove it if you want your warranty and charge you for the pleasure.
Pete at Scoobysport provides these, and they look to do an excellent job.
K&N induction kit is frowned upon, but as I'm a cheapskate and bought my car from Holland, I only had a year's warranty... so it doesn't really bother me as no-one so far has had any problems with one.
As I said, you're welcome to try the ramair element. But I wouldn't...

Well, in that case can you hear the K&N calling you.... ?
Probably best to hear it first, as it's an acquired taste. Wife said, "what the hell have you done to it?" and refused to believe I'd only replaced one bit!

I've got a privately brought MY99 with a Ram Air Filter.
A tad confused here though. Are we on about a Ram Air induction kit type thing or a replacement for the std. air filter? I've still got the air box on my car, so I guess mine is a filter.
It was installed by a Subaru dealer AFAIK (should be on the bills on at home).

Chiark is spot on. KT Green also fitted a RamAir panel filter to my MY00. It did contaminate the MAF, but at least it did not fail. I found about the issue on here and explained this to KT Green. They claimed that neither IM or Prodrive had told them of the issue. Shame more dealers don't log on to the BBS as there are people on here who clearly know more than some dealers. I am due to get a MY01 from Belgium this week and have yet to decide who I will let service her.

The filter uses a goop (probably called oil
) to catch crap in some circumstances.
However, the goop falls off. This is evidenced by the amount of it in the bottom of my old airbox.
Some of this will get sucked into the airflow, and some will land on the MAF, contaminating it.
This breaks MAFs.

All I know here is that MAF is the Mass Air Flow sensor and if it's broken, then your Scooby won't be a happy bunny.
Sounds like I should get my Ram Air taken off at the next service - how much are proper Subaru filters?

I'll have mine removed too Chris. I remember them as being around £15.00 I think, but that was a long time ago. I've run K&N and Ram Air for a long time (with no probs that I was/am aware of)- about 150,000 miles on 3 Turbos.
Thanks for the MAF info.

So for how long has it been recognized that ram air filters are not a good idea for the scoob? I was recommended one as an upgrade at my first service by Wilsons of Chadwell Heath which I took them up on, (as well as a P1 back box)should I swap it back to the original?

According to Subaru, the ONLY supported filter for MY99+ is the OEM air filter. Anything else is not acceptable...
Gregh - KT Green asked me if I wanted a performance air filter, "recommended by prodrive, only 40 quid and will make a big difference with your modified backbox".
So, wrong on two accounts...
