Question

hi,

Ive got a new MY04 WRX Wagon. Still running in, but im having trouble with gear shifts. I cant for the life of me change up without fluffing it! If I go up to 4/4.5k in 1st and aim for a fairly swift change to 2nd... total mess and car judders and coughs. If I change slowly like Im driving a transit van, no probs! Im sure its my technique - my previous car was an Alfa156 and I could change up in a flash.

Do you get turbo lag when you lift off the throttle? Or maybe its the lag when I get back on the gas but let the clutch out too fast. dunno, but this thing is gonna fly - if I could change gear anyways!!!

cheers

why not let the clutch out a bit slower, sounds like you are letting the clutch out too quickly, not sure

Try driving more 'progressively' and less 'aggressively'!!

I think you need to get used to it more, a lot of people say this after a short time with the car, but more driving will help!

Any excuse!

More or less as a police driver told me: (Hope I remembered and explained it right!)

Let the clutch up a bit slower (ie. don't just side step it) and keep the throttle open Keep your right foot still, or try to lift it a little for changes up the gears, and push it down a little for changes down.

Get the changes smooth first - so it feels like you're in an automatic, and the speed will follow. (It's possible - even with an old cranky 5MT Scoob box with dodgy synchros!)

Question

Had a problem a bit like this when I got mine in '98. Wife accused me of being scared of it.
2 weeks later: no probs.

My O3 is similar when it's cold but once warm it's no problem (most of the time). Maybe you need to warm it for longer before rushing things or wait for your clutch to bed in a little more for it to become smoother.

Out of interest, before my car's warmed up, I can't go from 2nd to 1st unless I'm doing 5mph or less. Is yours the same?
