Question

I purchased my STi8 with PPP back in April, and have just taken it to another dealer for its 10k mile service.

After the service I have been informed that the Turbo and CAT heat shields are missing. They apparently should have been transfered from the original exhaust to the PPP system.

The dealer that sold me the car originally, says that this is correct, and Subaru tell them not to fit the heat shields.

Does anybody know which of them is correct?

Thanks,
Stephen

Any ideas?

So should I get a third opinion from another dealer? How about contact details for somebody at Prodrive or Subaru who would know?

IMO they should be in place. The brake fluid is directly above the downpipe, so i'd want it in place

There should be lagging around the the PPP downpipe, and a heat shield over the exhaust side of the turbo. This should have been the original item from the car pre PPP, but cut to fit over the new pipe.

I had this problem myself, and I had to get my dealer to refer to the Prodrive technical people on how and why this should be done.

Yes the standard restrictive one is replaced with a DP fitted with a high flow sports cat.

When the PPP was fitted to my STi7 I had no end of problems with the heatshields vibrating at around 4000 RPM. Subaru were going to either remove them or modify them to alter the resonant frequency.

Perhaps your car has suffered from this problem.

Cheers,

Korky

Thanks for all yours comments, I looks like the heat shields should be in place.

The next trouble is that dealer that I bought the car from is now no longer a Subaru dealer (it was when I bought it). I have also since moved house and am closer to the one that serviced it and reported the missing parts.

What so you think my chances are of getting them replaced (at no cost to me) at the second dealer? As the PPP was fitted from new, at an authorised dealer, are Subaru likely to cover the cost?

Thanks.

Thumbs up

For those who are interested here is an updtae.

I have been in contact with Subaru UK on this issue and they have informed me that the heatshields are not required when the PPP system is fitted to the STi8.

Apparently the PPP exhaust systems are 'kevlar wrapped'.

An important detail here Steve: The new sports cat does indeed have a kevlar lagging jacket, rather than the steel shield that is fitted to the standard part.

However, the pressed steel turbo heatshield that originally came on the car should still be there. It should be refitted after being modified to clear the wider necked downpipe.

If your car still has its turbo heatshield missing, you should check again with IM to make sure they know what you're talking about, as without this part there's a propensity for the brake and clutch fluid to get a bit hotter than ideal.

On every one we have fitted, we have had to modify the shield to fit which is easily done by basically cutting a small piece away.

Indeedy. It seems as though Steve's has just been chucked away, which isn't the best way to proceed...

Also the dealer who "chucked it away", is no longer a Subaru dealer, so I guess unlikely to want to replace it!!

I will give Subaru another call.

Thumbs up Update

A quick update:

After taking the car back to the dealer, and having photographs taken, Subaru UK agreed that the heatshields were indeed missing. And they have now been correctly replaced.

Lightbulb hmmmm

Interesting topic this one as I recall that when the PPP was in development for the Sti7 (MY02 Sti) one of the problems they actually had was IM wouldn’t sign of the warranty, due to the fact that the sports cat was producing so much heat, and could actually create problems for the brake and clutch fluid. My car certainly had the heat shielding replaced after it was slightly modified by the dealer and the sports cat is well wrapped up.

I don't know where your info came from but it's completely wrong!!!

The cat is indeed well wrapped but the upper shield is still retained

The heatshields have never been omitted with the PPP, all that's needed is a small amount removing to clear the downpipe.

Question Confused….

Hello Mike,

Think you are getting me wrong here; what I am trying to say is that my car had the heat shield trimmed and re fitted when the PPP was fitted by the dealer in Aberdeen.

Regarding the info I posted on the warranty issue, that was what we were told at the time by the good folks at Subaru and Prodrive, as we all waited for the new age PPP to be signed off and delivered. I had the first Sti on the road in Scotland (30th Jan 02) and did get one for the very first batches of 6 PPP kits that were dispatched to the dealers from IM, so I remember the saga well. Certainly not trying to post wrong information Mike, only passing on the info I was given at the time.

On a different note, bit surprised to hear that Prodrive have been laying off personnel recently. Was talking to a suspension engineer, living in Banbury, who is doing something a bit different and getting away from the motor sport side of things all together, now that he is unemployed.

From fast cars to fast furniture

Regards
Jools
