Gearbox oil?

Question

Any suggestions on gearbox oil?
I tend to have problems with synchros.

we use castrol syntrax at work and don't have any probs at all.

I recently changed to full synthetic 75/90 (Silkoline) in an attempt to improve the poor syncro performance on my 99MY but with little success. 4th to 5th was baulky at high speed, it now crunches! I have an idea the full synthetic stuff is too slippery? Am thinking of changing to Castrol Syntrax (it mentions Jap gearboxes on the back of the container) Are there any more Syntrax users with opinions?

I had problems with syncros , especially 4th to 5th , until I changed to mobil 1 synthetic gear oil . Problems solved .

Hi there

Castrol Syntrax Universal is a fine semi synthetic product that should cure your problems here and has been designed with Jap gearboxes / axels in mind.

There is a couple of other products you may consider. Castrol SAF-XO or SAF - XJ, these two are fully sythetic gearbox oils built specifically for BMW and Toyota performace cars. They offer the best high performance lubricant technology available today. Unfortunatly they are both workshop grades and as such you cannot buy them from a Halfords etc. If you can find a Toyota or BMW dealer who uses Castrol Lubes you may consider getting them to purchase some for you.

I have found that fully synthetic in the gearbox stops the baulk rings from biting properly causing "crunches", just changed mine back to Subaru's finest semi-synthetic and box is nice and slick again.

Don't know what grade etc but will ask and post the info.

Jets, you seem to have become our oil expert in record time :-) Thanks for your contributions, and I've already decided to change my engine oil routine/grades in future.

But gearbox oil is another matter altogether. What's your recommendation for peeps like me who tend to use their car for short trips to the office/shops, some longer business trips, and a few flat-out track days?

Castrol Syntrax Universal? Or another fully synth oil that can be bought at regular retail outlets?

I'm due for a full transmission oil change very soon. I'd like to get it right!

I've got to agree with Bob, I've just spent the last two years with Mobilube SHC 75w90 fully synthetic oil in my g-box and rear diff. Occasionally I felt changes were not as good as they should be. I've just had my 4 yr/60000 mile service and couldn't get the Mobil oil in time so let the dealer put in their standard shell semi synthtic and I've got to admit that the change is a lot better. It's one of those rare occasion where spending more doensn't always get a better result. I believe the synchro's work better with the standard oil and the Mobil is too slippy for them to work properly.

Ok some feedback on the oil in my box ... my comments were tongue in cheek but, in fact, thats exactly what it is, apparantly Subaru supply bulk oil, its in a 20 litre drum and has SUBARU emblazoned on it and is a 75-90 oil semi synthetic.
