When the scoob is idling there is a strange squeaking noise coming from the engine any ideas??? or is it nothing to worry about

I have 94 wrx and on occassions when the car has been idling for a while , it too starts to making a squeaking /whistling type of sound , sounds like its from the front of the engine bay , butI too would be keen to know what it is

Spay some WD40 or similar on the alternator and/or air con belts when the engine is idling .sounds like the belts are dry!!!

 

Spraying the belts will just start them slipping, not a good idea, if they squeak its usually cos they are too slack. Check the tension, the idle pulleys can squeak if they are getting a bit tired as well. can also be caused by alternator or power steering pump bearings.

I am currently having that problem especailly when I turn the steering (use power steering pump). It only started since they changed the belts because they were cracking. They don't seem to be too lose though.

 

spraying the belts with wd40 will not make them slip it is the most renowned way of checking to see if they are squeaking. this will also eliminate noisy bearings with out buying new one's and causing a lot of expense.
usually after they have been replaced they will stretch as they bed in and require tightening up a bit.

 

Try some talcom powder on the alternator and power steering belts.Just sprinkle a small amount on the pulleys with the engine running.Sounds crazy I know but if it's the belt's causing the noise , then try it , it really works.
