Caused by one (or both) of two things.

Either the clutch fork return spring has become saggy

Or the clutch is well worn and now not balanced

On your age car, my money is on the first option.

The spring is under the intercooler and goes from the clutch fork to the bracket under the throttle body.

Mine tore away from the clutch plate and resulted in the rod and sock from the slave cylinder popping out.
Had to go 5 miles home in second gear.

This is exactly what my clutch does!!!! Last visit to Power Engineering, they took a look at my clutch pedal assembly compared to another car and found that a small grommet/bush(?) was missing from the assembly. They didn't have one in at the time so it's getting fixed next time I go back. In the meantime they told me it wouldn't have any adverse effects on the car.... but it pisses me off considerably!!!
