Should I be putting antfreeze in my intercooler waterspray for the winter?

I assume I should, but has anyone seen detrimental effects from doing or not doing so?

And how much?

 

Doesn't sound to me like that much of a good idea, as Anti-freeze is flammable (correct me if I'm wrong) and I wouldn't want to be blasting that into a hot engine!! Then again I don't have waterspray... just giving you my opinion

Don't have waterspray myself but I've seen stuff on sites which says to add neat methanol / ethanol (you can get it from chemists cheaply as "surgical spirit") to the water reservoir at the sort of concentrations you'd add screenwash: about 10% for an average winter day, maybe 25% if it's brass monkeys and well below zero. Although the good thing about cold weather is, you're unlikely to need the IC spray anyway ...

you can safely leave your water spray bottle empty over the winter months! You don't want to cool the charge TOO much! Too low a charge temp will reduce combustion speed and also affect mixture homogenisation due to poor atomisation of fuel at low temperatures.

If you intake temps are going over 45 degrees then it may still be worth running water spray but if they aren't (and I'de be surprised if they were at the mo!) then just use something that won't freeze, just add (say) ethylene glycol or some other additive used in windscreen washer bottles to stop them freezing [but you won't need the detergent! :-)]

Add substance's like those mentioned above at your peril ,

Because of a tendency for people to do this water spray was removed from P1 as a result of claims on UK 22B intercoolers.

 

I dont have this dilemma where I'm from.

 

Aero......just out of interest the intercooler spray on the EVO V and before shares the window washer reservoir, so Mitsubishi apparently thought it was okay.

I Know flame outs from exhausts are a sought after posing accessory, but maybe flame ins from the intercooler will be the next fad.
