I didn't get a col-air pipe with my K&N either! Are you sure it's not just the replacement pipe that fits between the MAF sensor and the cone?
K&N suggest utilising the bottom half of the air-box as the cold air supply.

Hi Stef,

The Pre97 K&N kit must be different to yours, the pipe is long and flexible, about 1 metre in length when stretched out. The instructions show the pipe under the front bumper, but I can't see anyway of getting there.

I've recently fitted a K&N Induction Kit to my MY96 Turbo, and was wondering if anybody's fitted or had one fitted and what they have done with the supplied cold air pipe.
I can't find a gap/route for the pipe, from the cone to the front of the car.

Cold air pipe? I didn't get one with my kit! Have been thinking about adding one but haven't investigated routing, etc. Interested in what you find out.

I was chatting to a bloke about this at Brands last Friday. The general view seems to be that once you are on the move, the air flow through the engine bay would be a similar temparature to that drawn in from the wing or front of the car. I guess this is the reason that they don't supply a specific cold air pipe (then again, they could just be cheap skates ).

Not knowing a great deal about the earlier cars (I'm assuming that the layout is roughly similar to my MY00), I would have thought that you could run a flexable pipe inside the front wing (where the resonator box normally sits) and direct this up to the air filter.

Where did you get your K&N for a MY96 from? I keep getting told by suppliers that there isn't a kit listed for the pre 97 cars.

Got my K&N from Well Lane Turbo Centre, although K&N now make the <97 kits up by hand and to order, I think.

Give them a ring, speak to Kevin, on 01924 441364, tell him I sent you, and mention the Subaru Impreza Drivers Club. I've organised a few rolling road days there.


I haven't noticed any real problems without the cold air pipe, but I will look into running the pipe (or something) from the wing.

Tell me to shut up if you like, but when i fitted a K&N fit on my Nissan 200sx, the pipe ran from the bottom of the cone, straight down, and popped out at the front of the car, just below the front bumper, to do this required chopping a hole in the cardboardy stuff under the engine.
Strange, as i would have thought it would have told you to do the same thing in the instructions that you received with your kit ?

Seriously though - when I fitted an induction kit to my 306S16, it did come with a cold air pipe (piece of flexible aluminium tubing) which was secured to direct air from just below the front spoiler onto the cone filter (and when you've seen the the normal route that the air must take through half a mile of plastic piping in a Peugeot engine, you know this is a good idea!).

The route for the Subaru is a little more direct and there is a general view (as stated above) that air flow temperature through the engine bay is similar to air drawn in through a cold air pipe (certainly true when the car is moving anyway).

You can fit a pipe quite easily in the front wing and direct it onto the filter if you so wish.

I thought about running it straight down (or near enough), but that entailed cutting a hole in the **** catcher which covers the bottom of the engine. With this being plastic and there for a reason, I wasn't too happy doing this.

As most of you have said, I think I'll ditch the cold air pipe, seen as the consensus is it'll be cold enough air anyway.
