Question

Hello

Had the WRX direct from Japan about 3 months and recently there has been a strong smell of burning oil once the car has warmed up.
Thought it was steering fluid at first cos I seem to have the gineric problem with the fluid cylinder cap .
Checked under the bonnet the other day and found that there seems to be a leak coming from bottom left hand side of the engine bay under the air box.
Is there a common fault on this area??

Can live with it as its hardly noticable and needs toppin up every 3-4 weeks 1/2 ltr.

My WRX had the same thing. I found the crankcase ventilation plate gasket had leaked out a fine mist of oil which eventually worked its way down the rocker cover and drops on to the exhaust, causing the hot oil smell. Mine has a K&N Induction kit, so only took about 15 mins to sort out!

Hope this helps!

Si.

It sounds exactly the same problem as I have. It is the rocker cover gasket that is leaking. On the drivers side this will then leak onto the exhaust. As the exhaust gets upto temp you get the burning oil smell. As long as you keep an eye on the oil level it is not too bad, however I will be getting mine sorted very soon.

From memory the gasket and bolt seals came to about £20. Once you have the air filter off fitting just a question of taking the bolts out, changing the gasket and refitting. I used silicone sealer on the gasket as well, better safe than sorry.

Hey Red, trust you are well

It's almost bound to be the rocker cover gasket as mentioned above - common problem. You could try nipping up the cover bolts with a 10mm socket, if there's only a little weeping then this may fix it, otherwise a new gasket and associated parts is £25 from your local main dealer. It's fairly easy to change but you'll loose the skin on a few knuckles doing it
