Further to my post below, when fitting the said filter I removed the resonator box (black plastic box to the right of the AFM) and discovered a small hose underneath coming from what I think is the boost control valve on the front of the drivers side wing. Is this in fact correct as the hose has snapped off from the resonator box and appears to have been like this for a bit.

Has anyone performed a quick fix on aforementioned hose, alternatively what are the implications of this being off??

Many thanks

You are correct, the hose comes from the vent port of the three port solenoid, you can leave it off but plug up the hole in the black box, otjherwise a very small amount of un metered air will be drawn into the engine. If you see oil residue leaking out of the pipe then you need to clean out the solenoid and find a way of re-connecting it.

OK, thanks Bob.

There seems to be a bit os risidual oil in the box too, nothing much though.

So you reckon its time for some brake cleaner in the solenoid??

Is it necessary to block the hose from the solenoid aswell as the box??

Cheers

No indeed, if you do that then you will only get about 0.5 bar of boost, the port is the one that vents pressure from the actuator allowing boost to rise and must be kept clear.

To clean it you need to disconnect the top and side hoses, make sure you get them back on in the right place. Unplug the solenoid and then connect one terminal to ground whilst pulsing the other pin with 12v supply from the battery, be careful not to short the battery to ground. At the same time as you pulse it spray carb or brake cleaner under pressure into the top port, this will flush out all the oil.

The oil in the box is probably from the engine breather system though.

Cool

Hi

I found this had broken off when I replaced my air filter recently. Its simple to fix...

0) Undo the pipe clip and pull out the broken off peice with some long nose pliers. Then

1) Go to your local garage/shop and get something like a 1/4" washer pipe joiner or a plastic fuel filter and chop off the pipe.

2) Drill out the resonator box to accept the pipe and glue in new pipe with a stong glue like Araldite and leave to set.

3) Next check it is in and secure and refit. You may find it a little tight and may have to use gentle persuasion to push it back over the new pipe connector.

Sorry its breif but hope this helps.. (Must remember to add it to my DIY section on my site !)

Thanks all, I reckon Ill give it a little clean out and araldite said pipe back into box next week. Come to think of it, I have noticed fluctuating boost on occassions, prob due to broken off bit of box wedged in hose!

Thanks again

Does anyone know if it is possible to replace the box with a straight through pipe? My thinking is less turbulence and restriction and possibly more power. Does anyone sell these?

This said pipe running between the Solenoid and Box thing (on my WRX), has some sort of valve wedged in it (Inside the pipe) just below where it connects to the solenoid.

Does anyone know what it is. Is it just a restrictor valve or is it a one way valve ????

The restrictor you mention is there to slow the pressure bleed form the actuator and minimise boost overshoot. If you take it out it may help improve boost response but could also drive the boost up and trigger the boost cut, safest to leave it just like it is.
