I have a WRX STi (MY94) and I continuously have problems with noises coming from the turbo heat shield. Most of the times I could get away by tightening the bolts of the heat shield but during the last week the noise became more noticeable giving me the impression that the heat shield is cracking.

My question is:

Is it safe to remove the heat shield and use the heat shield wrap that places like demon tweeks, graham goode sell ??? (Safe for both turbo and rest of the engine)

Has anybody done this in the past in this car without having problems ???

Regards,

Alex.

Not an answer to your question but I hope this helps.

I had this problem with my old UK MY95 turbo. The heat shield was indeed cracked causing an irritating buzzing noise on lifting the throttle at 3000 revs. It seemed to be a known fault amongst these cars (STi's may have used the same heat shield). It was fixed by the dealer by welding the cracked area and never recurred.
