When slowing down and the engines revs drop from 4500rpm to 4000 there's a noise that sounds like the kind you get when driving close to electricity pylons and you get that loud radio interference. It also does it as it comes through from 3500 rpm to 3000 rpm..never any other time..anyone got any clues ??. At first I thought it was the radio but it still does it when off so its not that..

 

I think my car suffers from a similar problem.I originally thought it was something to do with the powersteering pump, as it was rev related, but now I'm not to sure.wish I could help, but everyone I talk to thinks I'm imagining it !!

If it is a buzzing noise on overrun then it is probably a frequency dependent vibration.
Commonest one around those revs is a fractured heatshield. If it is, don't let dealer fob you off with a repair. It is an approved full parts/labour warranty job.

Docjock..Thanks for your input, Could well be the heatshield, noise is a buzzing one for sure, but the cars and STi V2 (no warranty, bought it from japan myself) only got 20K on the clock. is it a diy job or does this mean a trip to lockyears ? (hardly dare get a price...any idea of cost ?

My STi v2 has the same woe...left hand side of engine bay at 2700-2900 rpm. Had it bolted together a while ago but looks like it has reappeared.

Let me know what the financial damage is if/when you get it fixed.

I had a vibrating rattle on my MY94 which appeared after having a clutch fitted. Started at around 2500rpm till 3500rpm. Initially it was only in first gear but progressed to all gears. Took my dealer 3 attempt over a 7 month period to solve it.

Turned ou to be an electrical connector block on top of the gearbox casing vibrating. There's a metal tab which fits into the connector from the housing and it hadn't been bent flat to the box.

Rathedr than have a cracked heat shield replaced with another expensive metal one which is bound to crack again , if you've got to pay for the parts yourself do away with them and buy some heat shield wrap.

Far cheaper, and it won't crack or vibrate Places like Demon Tweeks and so forth usually keep it in stock.
