super chip
What is it with this 'Superchip' stigma?
I've recently spoken to a couple of people who seem to know their stuff, who rate it very highly.
As long as you don't mess about with the boost after it's been installed there should be no problems.
Does anyone actually know anyone personally that has had problems with them?
One person ran one is his UK98 with 295bhp/300lb/ft (17psi) for 40,000 miles with no probs whatsover.
I guess it depends who sets it up, just like any other ECU trickery.
Stef.

Moray,
I don't think it will be too long before Stef decides to take that route. Especially as his warrenty is due to expire soon!!!!
Harj and myself are working on him
Shaun.
P.S. As regards to his torque units, he must be getting mixed up with the way they measure COSSIE power

Stef,
I thought you didn't rate mucking around with ECUs?
295bhp and 300ftlb out of 17psi on a small turbo uk car... hmmm... who's rolling road gave those results? Sounds a little too good to me, maybe I should sell my large turbo sti car in favour of a one of these absolute monsters!

Moray.
I never said I rated them.
It was in fact 18psi too, not 17. Just saying what I was told.
Is it that unrealistic though? Lets say I went that route...surely my current '267bhp' would get near 300?
Certainly on the rollers that gave you 349 anyway!!!
Shaun.
As I've said, if I go that route people expect the car to be quick. It's unexpected when it's standard.
Anyway, the way your car performs mate I'd rather keep mine that way!

Stef,
That's probably because I am only reaching .8 bar (the same as you) of boost upto 5.5k (and then it jumps to 1.1) - that's why you can keep up with me!
Don't worry once I have the correct restrictor in place, then we will see!!!
Shaun.
P.S. You are getting as bad as Harj, make belittling comments with no technical facts!

Superchips are crap - blah blah blah
I dont think so Ive run with mine for the last 20K miles
When my Uk 97 scobby raced an STI IV and STI III in fast car Aug 98 it beat them both to 60

Stef,
Oh, So you need driving ability now to floor it out of bends and floor it on straight roads!!!!!
Like you keep telling me Stef, it's the torque that counts. Make the most of equal Torque figures, WHILE YOU CAN!!
Shaun.
P.S. As you are so eager to quote facts, the facts are I am at the same boost as you upto 5.5k. Now you know as much as me, that by that stage torque has either tailed off or decreased - so how can I possibley pull away from you. 285 bhp or not! And the facts also stand, that once the car is peak boosting at the correct rpm (i.e. 3.5 - 4k), then by definition the torque will increase considerably (as this is the area where the torque starts to peak anyway). I won't even mention about the slipping clutch, that quite convincingly starts to cause negative drag at the same place as torque starts to climb!!!
Don't take this personally Stef, I still love you.
Shaun (who get's very sensative at times - must be the time of the month)
P.P.S. Rich, tell me when Stef has his car booked in for his new bushes. I will make sure I come up and sabotage his car. Grrrrrr, I WILL BEAT YOU, I WILL.
LOL

Superchips are a very professional outfit and you don't get to their levels of success without good reason.
If you were to fit a chip on to an STi engine I would be cautious but that is only due to the fuelling issues. For a UK car I wouldn't hesitate.
Best thing to do is ring them or even better go and see them. Top bunch of people and only then can you make an informed decision.

Just for the record.
I know of one tuner (who is an official Superchips Modem dealer), and he would'nt even contemplate recommending a Scooby superchip, let alone fit one!!!!!
It has all been said before, concerning superchips. If you are willing to chip your car with a device that only fools your ECU into thinking that it is running less boost (but whacks in a bleed valve to run more!), but does not adjust fueling or ignition, then "MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU". Believe me, you gonna need it!
Anyone that thinks, that just cause it is supplied by a big name supplier, your safe - THINK AGAIN.
With Scooby engines having fit's of failing with chip upgrades, I can't see a boost clamp being the safest way of achieving RELIABLE power.

hi guys
I have just noticed your little discussion. I know personally of a car 5dr MY99 that was superchiped and I must admit it was the fastest uk car I have ever been in even faster than my MY99 WITH link ecu. the car was peaking at 19psi and holding 18psi this is the recommendation for a MY99 by superchips themselves. however as soon as a knock sensor was installed it was apparent that the car was knocking a lot. so the superchip was removed and returned to superchips by the garage that fitted it.
thats what i know and i have no idea how accurate the knock sensor and link are? but what i know is my car is holding 17.5 psi and with the knock sensor and link installed i am getting no knock at all ? so even if it is not very accurate surely my setup is a lot safer than the superchip one !!.
if you want names email me off-line and I can put you in contact with the guy who has the 5dr my99 for the full story. he is also a member of this BBS.

Stef & others,
It is a fact that the Scooby standards maps throw in more fuel then is required, but this in no way means that it is correct.
When I had my UNICHIP fitted (which boosts at 1.1/1.2 bar. The whole fuel and ignition map had to be remapped to compensate. The ignition had to be retarded at the top end of the rev limit by a massive amount, to stop det.
If a Scoob was to be driven hard, with a Superchip conversion with no fuel/ignition change and running 17 psi, believe me IT WILL GO BANG!!!!!!! End of story.
I defy anybody running a Superchip conversion at 17 psi, showing no det.

Evening chaps.
My 97 car was fitted with:
HKS Hiper Muffler Exhaust.Hks PowerFlow induction kit,HKS FCD FuelCutDefencer overboost chip and a mechanical wastegate adjuster by TDI 30,000 VERY HARD MILES AGO .
I have always run the car on superunleaded fuel and all I can say is it haules ****, has never missed a beat and nevaer overboosted. It runs a reliable 1bar and IMHO has made the car what it should be of the delivery line.
