HELP- Crazy tickover and Check Engine light illuminated
All,
New exhaust this weekend so I thought I'd better go out and give the car some serious abuse tonight!
About 20m into the drive all warmed up and making good progress :-) the car decides to misbehave.
Symptoms- Mad idle, varying wildly between 500 and 2000 rpm. After about a minute of this the Check Engine light illuminated.
Questions- I read the fault code and it was 24 (MY95 WRX) According to the Australian site with the error codes on it (Glenn's) this is a faulty idle valve. Has anyone else ever had this? Do the codes on this site (www.netspace.net.au/~glennw) cover Jap WRX's too?
Any advice will be warmly welcomed

We've cleaned up a few ISC's and changed some too. As you stand at the front of the car, it is located on the inlet manifold, to the right at the rear. It has a light coloured plastic top over it.
First check the connectors are secure. Then remove the rubber hose that feeds air to it and squirt aerosol carb cleaner in, with the engine running. If it is blocked by some large piece of debris, you may need to remove it to fully clean it. If your service agent has access to a Select Monitor, he will be able to read the operating range and this will help to show if it has failed completely.
The codes on Glenn's site do apply to WRX's as well as EU/AUS models.

Cheers Pete,
I found the idle valve from the map on Glenns site and cleaned the connection up etc. It seems to have solved it, so I'll get the carb cleaner out then reset the ECU and see what happens.
Thanks

P.S The recently fitted exhaust was yours (with a Magnex mid) V impressed- keep up the good work mate

I had exactly the same problem on my MY99. After one particually hard driving session the idle revvef from 500-3500rpm. I felt bloody foolish at the traffic lights on the way home (doesn't help when you've got one of Pete's exausts on as well). My dealer had to replace the idle valve as it was completely knackered.
