Might be worn track rod ends, or possibly even the rack itself.

Get someone to turn the steering gently while you hold the wheels to check.

If you feel movement, try and have a look and see if there is any play. Get it checked soon if you aren't happy though.

Your car does seem to have a harder than some life so its not improbable that something is worn.

Another query guys.....

When I'm stationary and the steering is on full lock, I've noticed that if I move the wheel gently from side to side, there is some play in the feel of the steering.
I haven't noticed it before.
Is this normal?
I'll get it checked next week at it's service, but was curious if it was normal.

If play means that you can move the steering wheel slightly backwards/forwards against lock and it feels loose/mushy (only words I can think to explain), than that sounds fine for PAS. You may also hear the power steering fluid/pump working overtime (as if you are trying to force water through a kinked piper).

Every single PAS car I have had (including 4x4 Calibra Turbo, Escort Cossie & Golf), have all done this on full lock with slight play.

 

Most cars end up with this sort of thing as the ball joints are moved well away from their normal positions on full lock. Also can get a knock if you quickly move steering wheel through a short arc with the engine off.

Worth checking out though.

Sh*T, and I always thought you went "sideways" because you enjoyed it. Now I find out it's because your steering is *****ed !!!!!!!. It also explains why you did some grass cutting at Donno' .

I will be at The Pod and Donno defending my honour, don't worry about that!
I guess my car is simply showing signs of ageing.
My dealer will be sorting out the steering play at it's 45k service on Thursday, but he says there's something not quite right.
Bushes or ends by the sounds of it. May be a good time to fit Powerflex.....
My clutch is getting noticeably worse, but the dealer says it isn't covered by warranty. I'll be looking into that further. May be a good time to fit an AP clutch.....
Still, the engine's running better than ever, and the car's sounding better than ever, so I'm not too fussed!!!!!
