Question

My stock as a rock MY99 5 door runs 14.5 seconds in the cool of the morning and 14.7 seconds in the heat of the afternoon, over the 1/4 mile at both Santa Pod and Avon Park.
I need to/want to/lust after running 13.4 seconds in the heat, anybody out there who has a similar vehicle capable of that type of performance let me know how you achieved it.or if you have any unproven theories pass 'em on. Failing that it will be trial and error! a costly and frustrating path.

Cool

John.

My MY98 car isn't quite stock, as I've got an aftermarket exhaust and induction kit, and my best at The Pod is 13.5 secs.
There's no doubt that it's the start where you make up the most time, but I don't have any particular secrets.

or get an STi, hehehe.

I reckon you will need circa 260bhp to run mid 13's, ask Stef .

I agree about the exhaust, filter, but not the bleed valve/boost controller.

The Possum, or similar will give FAR better, safer results.

Do you guys all have standard clutches?
If so how do they stand up to all those Santa Pod full bore starts?

I have a MY99 WRX (Australia - same as Turbo in UK), and on 98ron fuel on a cool day I posted a 13.78 at Calber Park (local Melbourne drag-racing track) whilst being quite kind to my clutch/gearbox.
Only mods are: DMA exaust system from the cat back, S02-pp tires, StiV rear wing (does nothing to your times but looks good), fire estinguisher (required for track days), bonnet clips (also required for track days).
The exaust and tires are the only performance mods: doesn't void the factory warranty, and they bring about 10-15hp and added cornering grip.
I think 13.7 - 13.9 it's about as fast as you can go without doing enough mods to affect the car's warranty (which I want to keep). Maybe I could get down to 13.5 but would have to be brutal on the clutch, and why would I? I love my car and want to look after it.
By the way, try circuit racing (time trials): it's much more fun to go around corners than just up a drag strip.

Get filter, exhaust, downpipe, turn up the boost with a bleed valve or electronic boost controller and make sure you aren't bogging it off the line.

Stef
Everybody has secrets!
But sticking to the point,I have thought about exhaust/filter upgrades however I cover many motorway miles each week and have doubts about living with a loud pipe. What brand have you used as it seems to give good results?

Thumbs up

John,

I was meaning the re-mappable Possum Link ECU. It's an euc upgrade for the scoobies. IMO it's currently the best ecu option, taking into account features/cost/performance.

John.
I have a full Scorpion system on my car, and whilst it is louder in the car, I personally really like it. I do 1,000 miles a week ( ) so it can't be that bad.

Doc.
I have done at least 30 1/4 mile runs in my car, plus 43,000 miles and countless track days, and my original clutch still feels great.
Dunno why!

Stef.

I don't actually have an Impreza, I have an Evo 1, but I'm guessing it can't be too different to an Impreza. I rev it at the line to about 4500rpm and just feed in the clutch quickly. Simple as that. You wil know when you have done it right by the surge of acceleration and the immediate whistling of the turbo (at least on my car). There is no lag due to the high rpms you have the car at. If you launch at too low of an rpm, the car will surge forward for an instant and then slow and take a while before the boost comes on and any meaningful acceleration occurs.

You can easily and safely (i.e. no engine damage)get an Impreza into the mid 13s without the expense of a Possum Link. If you are looking to do some serious tuning I would recommend the LINK, but it really is not that hard to get into the 13s.
