'Check Engine' - What does it mean?
Hi Folks,
The 'Check Engine' light flicked on for a second or so 5 mins into my morning commute today (MY94 turbo). Can anyone tell me what it ** actually ** means and what the most likely causes / remedies are!
No smart answers please!
Oil & coolant are just fine. As is sound & temperature. Last service 5K miles ago.
Someone out there must know!
Cheers

Matt,
Glad you have a MY94 WRX! Non-STi import?? Check my posting in this area on error codes..
This actually means the ECU has detected an incorrect signal from the engine, and you should see your dealer. In truth there is probably no need to revisit the dealer yet.
Get under the steering column and connect the 2 black cables together, then activate the ignition. Count the flashes (long/short) and report that back to us. Eg: 2 long 4 short is EC24 (I got that one). Email me offline if you want.

Hi Pilch,
Thanks for replying. My scoob is a regular UK model - actually registered in Nov 94. Looking at some other threads has made me wonder whether it is in fact an MY95 (i.e. Model Year). Never mind that now....
Does your error code detection technique work on all Scoobs? One more prob here - the fault has now gone away (the light went out). Presumably the ECU is happy again - until the next time. Intermittent faults are always the hardest to find.
I'm hoping that someone knows what the 'obvious' things are that I should check (beyond oil & coolant level). BTW my cars a high miler (85K - if that's relevent).
Any help from the experienced?!
Cheers

The ECU retains in memory any fault codes that have been present, since the ECU was last reset.
If you do connect the Diagnostic Check (DCheck in Service Manual) black wires, the check engine lamp as Pilch says flash a code at you. Or even better get to a Select Monitor which will tell you straight away what the fault was.
It may be worth doing an ECU reset, to clear the memory and driving it again, to see if the code ever comes back, it may have just been a minor glitch.

Dr Hu,
Cheers for the reply. I successfully got the code flashed at me: 21 - coolant sensor. Need to go investigating that now.
Is there an easy and quick way of doing an ecu reset without disconnecting the battery?

Thanks for the responses guys.
The ECU reset sequence on the MRT web site is bizarre. I had to check to see if it was April 1st
Is there a similar sequence for a manual (the one listed is for an auto)?
Cheers
