Having just caught the thread on AFM damage I am seeking a post-mortem on the HKS Induction Kit.

I have had one fitted, on and off, my STi V for about 5,000 miles in total, fitted in May.

No downside to date, and my car would seem to be just a tad quicker than a Type R with Blitz and no baffles (see SANTA POD).

quattro, have you still got your's fitted - is your car OK? I am going to check the part number tonight when I get home. By the way, the version I have fits easily - 20 min job - with a strut coming up from the original front air box fitting and a horizontal strut directly from the inner wing. There is no damping as such in the strut fitting. Does this sound right?

Anyone else had problems - is it particulate damage, or vibration as the Yanks suggest?

My HKS induction kit is alive and well, thank you. No problems at all and there will be none. Part number for STi5 needs to end with -1007. For as long as you have two vertical brackets one for the side, and one going down it will be fine. As always, damage (virtually, except within normal minute percentage associated to any product under the sun) never happens unless there is a proper, valid reason or incorrect parts/fitting have taken place. Oil, grease or dry - the choice is yours. They all need to be cleaned or replaced eventually.

An induction kit is my next upgrade, I have an ITG filter but prefer the aesthetics of a cone and from most reports I've read offers better throttle response.

Is the HKS better/as good as the Blitz system offered by PE?

What is the cost of both items and do they come with fitting instructions?

Dave U is making a reference to me - something which I can't mention ever again - I promised.

I'll check the part no - I have two struts - one vertical to the original bolt from the standard filter - one to the inner wing.

Glad to hear you've had no problems. Same for me, but some of these threads get you worried.

Dont bother with the HKS...fit the Blitz....

Or...for nearly half the price, but virtually the same performance, fit the K&N filter...

Followed up with HKS and my tuner - initial feedback suggests that the only difference between the 004 and 007 is a small deflector plate inside the housing - damage is probably caused by water getting through.

The mounting appears to be the same as with the 004, any comments from anyone who has tried both?

Am going to follow up in detail and will update you with a definitive answer - hopefully direct from HKS.

Well guess what, my Air FLow Meter has gone AGAIN!! this is now the FOURTH TIME!

I have an Sti5 with the HKS Induction kit(004 part number) BUT with the addition of a plate as per HKS's comments to restrict the flow of air.
The plate seems to have done little to stop the AFM breaking, as after it was fitted it whent within 48hours!

I am getting the the end of my tether now as it has currently cost me nearly a grand so far and I am still none the wiser!

I hear many people saying that you don't want a HKS filter get a blitz, itg, pipercross, etc etc... Everyone seems to contradicting everyone else.
ALL I am asking is there anyone out there that could give me a definative answer as to why this is happening?? or point me in the direction of someone else in the know.. maybe someone who runs scooby rally cars?

Is there a way of bypassing the AFM???

The hot film maf is sensitive to vibration much more so than the hot wire. Air flow should not cause it a problem ... it is designed to be in air flow.

Suggest you check out your mounting brackets etc. If undue vibration is being transmitted as the engine moves on its mounts (its not bracketed to the body by any chance is it ?) then this could cause a problem.

BTW the only way I know of eliminating it is to fit a Link ecu ... this does not use or need the maf at all but uses the map sensor only.

Adding to what Bob said... if it is too rigidly mounted, this can be a problem too..

What you want to avoid are the sharp sudden vibrations.... hence mounting it on rubber mounts might help..

As for replacing the MAF/AFM... an after market ECU is one solution.. the other is a HKS VPC... but to be honest, you can buy a Possum Link ECU from NZ (or Scoobysport) for less than the VPC.

My induction kit is mounted fairly firmly to the body shell and it hasn't broken the AFM, neither has quattro's, also a similar firm mount....

.....however it would seem that I have a hot wire AFM, not hot-film even though it is an STi V, built in Sept 1998.

Anyway, my car is fine, and although I feel very sorry for Graeme and would suggest you return to the standard air box with an upgraded, dare I say it, HKS panel filter, I am less paranoid than I was.
