Help I am stuck.

Just rang Pete at scoobysport who is going to help but I would appreciate some suggestions in the meantime.
Firstly what kind of range are people getting on a tank? I drive fast but not all the time and normally have a wide mix of driving but cannot explain why the range has dropped from about 280 when I got the car to about 200 - 220 miles per tank now. Is this figure normal, the car is a late MY95 260 bhp wrx.

On top of this, and this is my main concern, when flooring the car in first gear from standstill (not revving and dropping the clutch just accelerating in gear) there are distinct surges of acceleration rather than a smooth increase. Not just one, consitent with the turbo coming in, but two or three. I thought that this may just be the effect of the power or torque curve accentuated by the low gear but am sure that this behavior cannot be normal. It has done this since I bought the car.

MPG varies a lot between cars (16 >30mpg).If the drop is a recent one, the colder weather will have an effect.I've also noticed a drop, but I have a 5 mile trip to work, most of which is with the cold start enrichment on.

Circa 220mls is quite common.See what it's like on you next long trip.

Has you car had any mod's done.Have you checked the condition of your air filter.Are you sure it only happens in first.

Try flooring it from 2k > 5k in 4th.See if it does it.

It's uncommon to have a problem in just one gear.

It's gone at leas 4 years on it's original ignition coilpacks? These units do degrade over time, and a reduction in ignition performance could cause miss-fires and bad fuel economy.

I am sure Pete will get to the bottom of it!

Is it possible that it could be misfiring without me hearing it?

Are there cases when you only feel the misfire.

Also the car is less than three years old as it was registered december 96. It was probably sitting around in a factory until it was bought over a year later

 

My old 96 car developed a missfire, occasionally on hard acceleration it would seem to "stutter", you could certainly feel the very short lack of acceleration, but it wasn't always that audible.

Fingers crossed that is all it is. The problem is definitely inaudible and is well described as a stutter. Definitely only occurs on hard acceleration.
