Secret Test of Power Engineering Mid Section Exhaust

I have just had testing carried out of the mid-section exhaust from Power Engineering. My car is an STi 5 with Scoobysport downpipe and rear backbox plus replacement K & N panel filter.

Before the Power Engineering mid-section was fitted : 299 BHP at 7,200rpm 273lbs of torque at 3,800 rpm

After the Power Engineering mid-section was fitted : 300 BHP at 7,400rpm 274lbs/ft torque at 3,800rpm

This does represent the real increase in performance but when you study the graphs closer the difference in torque between 3,000rpm and 4,000rpm is quite staggering.

The increase in these revs in torque are as much as 13lbs/ft of torque. This is quite noticeable on the road and the turbo seems to spin up quicker giving you more torque further down the rev range. Consequently acceleration has improved.

The mid-section is designed to fit between the Scoobysport & Power Engineering downpipes and backboxes and seems to give an increase of about 7% in terms of driveability. The cost of the mid-section is £178 plus VAT and will be available in two weeks time.

Tim,

Does the PE mid pipe have a cat' in it ?.When I changed to a Magnex mid' pipe,I got gains of,

2250rpm 10ftlbs.
2500 " 15 ".
2750 " 24 ".
3000 " 27 ".
3250 " 19 ".
3500 " 7 ".
3750 " 3 ".

It then rises again,and by 5250rpm it gains 18ftlbs.It them holds +15/16ftlbs,untill it tails off at 7250.

Bhp also up by +19 in the mid' range,and 6bhp peak.

These are taken from before,and after runs,about 1hr apart,at PE's.

The down side is that the Magnex pipe,hasn't got a cat' in,But it is stainless steel,and it only costs £115 inc' vat' !!!!!

Question

Did you need any setting up after fitting the PE kit or was it just a straight bolt on, run it on the rollers job?


The reason I ask is that on Friday I am having the complete BPM twin dump system fitted and wondered if anything is likely to want altering as a result of it.

There were no changes - the car went straight back on the rollers.

Mark,
The pipe has a small silencer fitted to it, but no cat.
The cat was removed after installing the SS downpipe. (STi 5 only has 1 cat, whereas the STi 4 has 2). This is probably why you experienced these gains.

Tim,

The Sti4 only has 1 cat',but does have an extra silencer box(looks identical to UK cat').Like you say, the STI5 has a straight through pipe,no box.I was surprised,as I too thought the STi4,and WRX had two cat's.

I was hoping that PE's pipe had a cat' in it;easy swap at m.o.t time,and would explain why the Magnex gives much better gains.So now I'm not certain why there's so much difference.Glad I only paid £115 for the Magnex.

Question

Mark,

Are you 100% sure that there is only one cat in the STi4's standard exhaust? PeteC reckoned there were two (before my SS downpipe was installed). If there is only one, does it live in the downpipe or the centre section? I.e., have I still got a cat or not?

Do you know what the bore is on your Magnex pipe and does it contain a silencer?

Some of the late STi 4's and 22B's did not have a centre cat. The vast majority had two cats.

When only one cat is fitted, the centre section has the cat can, but this is a small straight thru silencer.
