I was going to buy a new Downpipe through the group buy , but have managed to get hold of a second hand one and an up pipe & CEL Fix.

The car is a MY01 WRX bugeye, How easy a job is it to change the pipes and fit the CEL fix ?? Is it something I could do or should I leave it to the experts ? will i need any gaskets ?

If its a pro job , can anyone recommend somewhere local to me that would do it. or do any of you guys with oil in your veins want to earn a few quid

Cheers
Phil

I'm in Morley david.. Yes I have a garage.. and a kettle & beer and food (and a few quid burning a hole for someone to do the job)

Its probably not up to your standard as garages go, just your typical 3 bed semi garage.. but it does enough for me..

I'd really appreciate it if you could help.. but if not I'm just happy to get advice

Phil

The downpipe is not a bad job to do "IF" the nuts that hold the downpipe to the back of the turbo come undone. They do have a nasty habit of seizing on the bolt threads and them become a major pain to sort, as you then have to replace sheared studs as well. may be better to get a garage to fit, at least they will have a bit more "kit" round them if they hit problems.

Madgrip , if you have a ramp then the up pipe can be a pig, without its an absolute *a*t*r*. Im a tech as a living and cant say I enoyed doing one. One of the worst bits is removing the EGT sensor, very fine thread for a hot pipe like that.
No doubt I was doing it the hard way though lol

most places want to charge for about 3 hours work at an average of £40+ vat an hour ( excluding main dealers)

think the dp needs to come off to replace the up pipe any way

As a fairly competent DIY mechanic, I found changing the downpipe is fine. After looking closer, I took it somewhere to get the up-pipe done for me. Downpipe would normally come off to get at up-pipe, so just get somewhere to do the lot for you.

If you're doing the up-pipe you/they also need to take the headers (exhaust manifold) off. Worth getting them ported whilst they're at it, IMHO.

Madgrip

I got my local dealer to fit my Haywood and Scott de-cat up and down pipe and CEL fix

whenever I visit there's always lots of Scooby's about from PI's, 22b (now sold to DaveW ), Imports, Most modded, Etc. And a curtesy car too !! They do charge more but seem to know exactly what they are doing.

Midlife.....

PS I have a Scoobysport CEL fix which REDUCES but does not eliminate CEL coming on. best to have the CEL fixed in the ECU by EcuTEK

The downpipe is easy to do yourself but the up-pipe is a pig of a job,you should get away with using the old downpipe gaskets again but ALWAYS use new up-pipe gaskets at both ends.

The CEL fix install is easy depending on which version you have, if its the ECU connection type i would let a dealer do it but if its the wired in version direct to the sensor itself then that is a doddle.

As for somebody mentioning the need to remove your headers and getting them ported, dont bother as the gains are debatable and not worth the additional cost.

Phil, definitely worth getting the up-pipe done at the same time m8.Gets rid of that cat in the uppipe and removes the chance of a broken cat going into the turbo
