Fitted these not that long ago, and just noticed the holes !!!

Anyone else got this problem, almost all the holes have hairline cracks on them

Under heavy braking I get severe noise coming from them, they had been fine upto now, and even when I went on track at Trax I stuck my OE discs on so I didnt bu66er these up

AFAIK this can be a common trait with drilled disc's if their used hard and get very hot!
I bought an AP kit a while back and was advised against useing drilled for this reason.
Sorry thats abit negative m8.

Gary.

Sonic,
It's not a huge problem mate, just keep an eye on them, if they get very big, complain, I doubt you'd get anywhere if you moaned about what you've got there, next time, get just grooved!!

The sign of discs that were drilled after casting rather than having the holes cast in.

Bugger,

I have these DBA discs too, drilled AND grooved.
I have just gone through a set of standard Subaru pads
after 4k miles (they were 20% used with my old discs)
to bed the discs in and have had DS2500s added today.

I break hard from speed ALL of the time.
I will check mine too and let you know.

What pads have you been using out of interest ?

MKC

Sonic, i've fitted 3 sets of these to 3 separate MY01 cars, mine are fine and so are 1 of the others but Nick A's disc's are exactly the same as yours (4-5 months old).No track days and we are all running Ferodo DS2500 pads.
To be fair it looks like Nick may be getting a replacement set as he bought them new from JW Racing but i dont know where you would stand as youre the 2nd owner.
Just keep an eye on them, the key is to brake gently to get some heat into them first before hard braking from any speed.

I was thinking of getting a set of these, might change my mind now, how do they compare against a standard set?

As said above, holes should be cast and not drilled!

They look fancy but its just a way of making a plain disc look sporty so they can sell them!

Porsche disk cast holes also end up with hairline cracks around the holes, but the fact that they're cast rather than drilled means they're not going to get worse.

My Porsche GT3 disks have had hairline cracks for half of their 18 month/multiple track day life.

I would keep a *very* close eye on cracks around drilled holes - a set of Tarox did this to me in the early days when I moved from DS2000 to DS2500....luckily the chunk of disk broke off at low speed (as the disk was cooling I guess), rather than trying to haul the car down for a hairpin.....

What pads are you running them with?

If the holes are drilled they should also be countersunk. Sharp edges are where stress cracks start, it's an engineering nightmare.

Thanks for the info Pete

My pads are DS2500 equivalents (japanses ones) the holes are ever so slightly countersunk, and away from the edges (according to the blurb to stop the weaking of the discs, from holes being too close to the edge of the discs)

The cracks havent got any worse, and I am keeping a close eye on them, my pads however have been cooked on a few occasions, and occasionly under heavy braking, they are very loud now, but I can still stop

Hi lads!

As the biggest Scoob specialist in terms of offical UK DBA sales in the UK (Silverfish bring them in officially) I'd like to reassure you that the DBA Long Life Gold are NOT being discontinued at all. They have had a few problems with the gold discs, I myself have had 3 customers with the exact same problem, which of course, I have got sorted out for them, but they are definitely staying on the market, as the ammount of perfect sets out there far outweigh the ammount of faulty dics.

However I drive pretty hard every day and ran a set on the rear of my STI 7 for about 6 months with absolutely no problems at all, I also had the 5000 Series 2 Piece discs on the front which offer a whole different ball game in terms of performance.

I believe they are looking into making the discs stronger, but of course, drilled discs often fail in this way, that is why we have launched the Clubman or 4000 Series Disc, which uses just grooves and the Kangaroo Paw cooling system and should be coming into the UK in the next month or so.

Basically if you feel you drive hard everyday, I'd recommend the 4000 Series, if you just want high performance road discs the golds will more than do the job, and for out and out racing, use the 5000 series.

Anybody interested or needs a chat please get in touch.

Jamie
