Guys, my new WRX RA is fitted with a safety devices roll-cage. I'm actually quite tall and I find my head too close to the front bar. I'm also sitting higher up in the car than I'd like.

Is there a mounting kit for mounting the seats direct to the floor, doing away with the runners? I could do with getting down 3 inches or so.

I'd get in touch with a seat specialist, as if you dont mount the seat correctly, you could increase the risk of injury due to wrong seat fitment/mounting failure. Failing this, you may well have to fit alternative seats due to the cage fitting, which have a lower squab height, which in the case of rally seats, they do have.

...In which case take the cage out. If all you're doing is "normal" driving, the chances of you having an accident where the cage would prove a net benefit would be vastly outweighed by the chances of you having a lower speed shunt where it could on balance cause you problems. Put it back in for track days when you'll have a helmet on...

Mounting the seats direct to the floor is a bad idea, period. Unless the floor is reinforced with plating or large/heavy gauge washers, it's too easy for the bolts to pull through in the event of an accident, which is obviously the last thing you want. As SS says, take professional advice before going anywhere near this route.

I could do with getting down 3 inches or so.
A competition seat with a proper mounting system would appear to be the most practical safe option. IIRC either Cobra or Corbeau make a siderail mounting kit that attaches to the existing four seat hardpoints. If you want an off the shelf system, that's about as good as you'll get

Depending on what you have now, you should be able to ditch the sliding adjusters and make it a fixed seat. Will probably only save 2" max though.

As mentioned, don't change the stock mounting points, nor the one piece base design, for safety reasons. Not so bad if it's competition only (and you're anchored by the 4 point harness to chassis), but very bad news if your lap belt is mounted the seat base in a head on.... :O

Indeed it is... beast

monkey: The car is mainly for track days, I'm not going to be taking the cage out and putting it back in on a regular basis.

Can anyone recommend a professional who might be able to help me then?

I've been through all this on my hill climb STiV3. The advice above is very good.
Try talking to Town Eng Garage (www.townendgarage.co.uk) they do seat mounts/competition seats. With a 4 point belt system (get a 3'' wide type) linked to the shell (most important) you will feel parts of that lovely car you never knew existed!
I have a Sparco seat, as low as I could go on custom (rake adjustable) mounts and sit 6'' lower in the car. It has a cage the same as yours. With a crash hat on I have lots of headroom. Makes driving the car FAST really good, trouble is you feel a midget next to the passenger...
I drive 3000 miles on the road also in the car, only real drawback was I needed to add a deep sunvisor strip as I have no sunvisors in the car due to the 6 point cage, maybe you have the 4 point.

What a great car you have, have fun!
Graham.

Hi Graham

Thanks for a tip, I shall give them a call tomorrow. I've been thinking about hillclimbing in my RA, when I'm happy with its set-up

Be very careful, the hill climb bug is hard to shake off when its got a grip on you!
I've been trying to shake it off now for 11 years....9 with a 911 and 2 with my Sti.
I have warned you.
Graham. (good luck!)

How did you get on in the 911? A mate of mine is buying an older one (late 70's) and is planning on doing all sorts of crazy stuff to it, like putting a fibreglass body on it and space-framing the rear suspension

Cool

He wants to do what?
To an old 911?
Is he missing something?(in his head)

My 911 is a 1973 coupe stuffed with a 3200cc flat 6 with a real 230bhp and torque (chipped). It weighs in @ 1000kg, has no rubber in the suspension anywhere, sits just 60 mm off the road and is wonderful.
You will ruin it all doing strange things to it, and he will get arrested by the Porsche Club and won't ever live again....
I hill climbed it for 9 years until I got scared (and older) and thought I should settle down and race a nice little Scooby, that's why I here now!
My STi is now much quicker than the 911 and I'm not scared of it.
Every thing you have read and heard about 911's is true, and they are a 'real' car, despite, or because of, where that fantastic engine is.
Graham.

Nope!
Don't knock it untill you've tried it!
Depends if you want to pretend to be Burns in the WRC, pretend that the lower CofG will improve the cornering, or you just want to look up to your passenger!
Does actually make a big difference round a track, but is a bit of a pain on the road, very hard to reach the car park machine from the car...
you really feel 'in' the car, but the seat must be a real race seat.
Try it.
Graham.
