Just had MOT done and the guy advised me of 2 things, one being power steering fluid leak and the potential of it being the steerin rack.........

A reliable garage I always go to.....

Before I jump on the phone to all and sundry.... How much should I expect to pay for a Steering rack if I require one??

I pressume the cheaper option is to go to the likes of GradeA subaru or the like....

What are the pro's and cons.....

Would appreciate your comments......

It is not confirmed as being the rack yet, it will be going back to hospital shortly to determin the problem

I haven't seen any legacy with dry power steering pump. Friend of mine has exactly the same car turbo MY92 saloon with 452.000km and wet steering rack from 100.000 and still he hasn't changed it!

I wouldn't change it; it's a waste of time and money. What I would do is get myself thicker steering fluid or some stuff to reduce leakage.

It's only recently started....... i did notice a small shortage in the fluid before the summer, but then it never happened again... until recenlty

Perhaps the cold weather............ and I ain't been using it that much.....

It's only a teaspoon at a time........

noticed a bit on the drive before the garage told me........

it's got q47k on the clock, so still a bit left in her yet eh??!!!

Any suggestons on a thicker option..... (excuse me I'm thick)!!!

 

The pinion seal will be going hard with age i looked at mine and that is where mine leaks from as you say it is only a small amount

you can get stuff to put in auto boxes to soften the seals could be worth a try
its the same fluid

 

Yup, mine does the same ('92 turbo sedan, 270Mm), leaks at the input shaft seal. Been told that there is a seal/repair kit available from Subaru, but haven't checked that info, too lazy.

 

Seal/repair kit does exsist but it's plenty of work for very skillfull mechanic so not exactly cheap. We tried once this and it worked for 10.000km then same story again.

I would let it as it is! There are some chemicals on the market to stop power steering leakage, I would check in auto-chemical (oils etc) store.
