Bearing/Diff noise from rear?
I'm starting to get noise from the rear of the car at speeds over 40 mph, most noticable on smooth surfaces when there's not much tyre noise to drown it out.
My car is due for it's 45K service soon - has anyone had problems with rear bearings or diff. at this sort of mileage, and if so, how much did it cost?
Cheers,
Steve

I have a rumbling/growling noise coming from the rear of my 93WRX (43,000 miles). It only makes the noise on over-run and I'm convinced that it is the diff bearings.
It appear that the driveshaft oil seals have been replaced at some point, due to old oil staining around the driveshaft entry point on the diff.
If the bearings have gone it's common for the oil seals to give way first as the oval movement of a worn bearing wears the seal.
Therefore, check for oil leaks around the diff.
Don't have a clue about the cost as I havn't approached anyone yet, I'm just waiting for the noise to get louder, so that I can be sure that it's the diff.

Cheers Scott. It'll be checked at the next service in a few weeks, but I'm starting to worry about the cost on top of everything else I've spent on it this year!
The noise ain't just on overrun though, so maybe it's wheel bearings?
