Trying to help a mate upgrade his PC on the cheap and one option could be to go for Celeron instead of P4. I was going to keep the existing machine and simply replace the system board, processor and memory.

As he'll be using it mainly for games (already has a decent graphics card) will the Celeron 2.2Ghz be up to the job?

256MB and an Athalon 700.

If you wanna stick with AMD, you can get Athlon XP2500 & 2600 cpu's for £60-70 now. Celerons are roughly the same price with lower performance & P4's double the cost, so I know which I would go for

Ditto Daz

Just built an xp2500 on a asus a7n8x with a radeon 9800 (non pro) and it stonks along with minimal tweaking 18,000 in 3d marks 2001se
