Hi there!
I've decided to get a laptop. The main reason for this is to stay on Scoobynet as long as possible. If, however, you ask my Mrs, I really need one for work!
Anyway, being a complete novice when it comes to computers i've no idea what to go for. I'll have about £800 to spare. I know i'll want 256mb RAM and a 30 gig hard drive but what about the processor etc?
All help much appreciated.

Personally I think this is good value for money. Acer are an ok make, but I've never seen one in the flesh so to speak, so I cant say what the build is like. Spec is good for the price, with memory expansion there for the future (more ram is always better for a computer, especially a laptop where bus speed is notoriously slower than a desktop).
Once again, not tried one, not affiliated etc. You pays ya money, ya takes ya chances You could always pop along to PCWorld and see if they have one on display?

By a Toshiba mate. I have had one for a year and it hasn't missed a beat. I think that there are a couple within the current range that will meet your budget. Have a look at the Toshiba website.

I think you should definitely consider an Apple iBook: http://www.apple.com/uk/ibook/
I 'switched' to Mac at Christmas (with an iBook) and haven't looked back...
I'd recommend you speak to AllanB who works at Macwarehouse - he should be able to give you some great advice!
Andy.
