I am a new owner of the Impreza Turbo and I just want to ask about a strong thumping noise I hear from the transmission (I cannot specify where exactly) when changing gears quickly and obviously releasing the clutch quickly.
I am aware that up to a point this is normal but does the Impreza do it more than other cars? I am also aware that there is a lot more torque that is suddnly cut-off and then re-applied compared to slower cars but this noise had me a bit worried...

 

There was a thread on this not long ago. Search for thump and you'll probably find it. It's quite common, but you should try to adjust your driving style to place less starin on the transmission.

It was me, about 2 weeks ago, asking about the "Thud" coming from somewhere in the rear of the car. I have since driven a demonstrator MY99, and it does the same.

IM here in Sweden say it is quite normal, and depends on driving style. As John suggests, add a little clutch slip, and the noise does not happen.

But what I would like to know is what is the exact source of the noise? Drive shaft not tight? "loose" bearing in the differential? Can the offending part be inspected to determine wear?

I am worried that one day the car may go "thud", followed by snap,crackle, pop, crash, bang, clink clonk, leaving a trail of transmission parts behind me!
