Mobil 1 vs Mobil Super
#1
Whilst dropping off my MY98 WR at the Subaru dealer for its 15K service, I left 5 litres of Mobil 1 in the car and asked them to use this instead of thier own oil(Mobil Super). I was told they would only do this at the risk of losing the 3yr warranty, as Subaru recently send a memo to all dealers stating they must only use their own oil, as Mobil 1 is to thin in viscosity.
I was under the immpression Mobil 1 was ideal for turbo 's and being fully synthetic would last longer etc. etc..
Not that I don't believe my trusty dealer, but does anyone know for sure if using Mobil 1 does void the warranty?

Alex,
do a quick search on this BBS for Mobil and you will find a few threads on the subject.
I think most people will be avoiding Mobil 1 to keep their warranties intact until it's all resolved. There is a Motorsports version of Mobil 1, which isn't as thin, but offers excellect high temperature protection, which is exactly what we need for our engines. Same price (or slightly more expensive) than the usual 0w40 grade.

My thanks to every one regarding the use of
Mobil-1 motor oil . Please visit the Mobil
web site .
Things are much more clear to me now. 0w-40
is not recommended, how ever there is a 15w-50
Mobil-1 and this -hopefully- should be perfectly suitable for use in the impreza turbo ...
YOUR COMMENTS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME
THANK YOU

Letter dated 8th April from Mobil
"Mobil recommend the use of Mobil 1 Motorsport 15W/50 for use in Subaru vehicles during their warranty period in order to adhere to the viscosity requirements of the Subaru warranty"
This we already know BUT it follows with:-
"Out of warranty we Mobil recommend
Mobil 1 0W/40".
(Rest of letter pointing out No engine problems etc etc just 0W rating not on approved list of Fuiji Heavy Industries.)
Odd that they recommend going back to 0W/40 or is it me?

I think it is more of an issue of which Oil companies Subaru are associated with. I find it hard to believe that Mobil 1 in any form is unsuitable, Porsche for instance recommend it for all their models and use it in the Factory. Ironically all their engines are flat boxer engines, the same as Subaru, including Turbocharged ones.
Mobil 1 also sponsered the works Porsche teams during The GT series.
A rally team who use Subaru's in the UK National events use Mobil 1 Motorsport oil.

I talked to the Passenger Vehicle Lubricants Manager of Mobil Oil Hungary (he is one of my friends) and he said that for the Scooby engine the Mobil-1 synthetic oil is the best choice, but not the 0W-40, rather the 5W-50. I don't know whether the Mobil-1 5W-50 is avaliable in the UK or not, but oils with 0W are not recommended for any HQ turbo engines.

It seems that the boys at Fuji are one step ahead of themselves in producing such a masterful motor, but not really switched on as to what is the best oil to protect the thing aswell as give more long term performance- suppose that's down to the oil companies, not the Subaru scientists- afterall, who are they to know!
By the way, where can you get this 15W/40 'Motorsport Mobil One'? I've never seen it?
Bye, and thanks in advance for any answers!
