MAF Sensor playing up???
The MAF sensor isn't in the filter box, it's in the section of inlet tract immediately after it.
It is possible to do some very rough testing by putting a digital voltmeter on the sensor's output and checking for voltage rise when the throttle is opened, but this is a very rough, inaccurate test, and is not sufficient to identify whether the sensor is misreading or not.
Unfortunately, the best way to tell whether yours is playing up is to buy another sensor element, and see if whatever problem your car is suffering from goes away.

You can get a reasonable indication from DeltaDash or a Select Monitor, but this isn't 100% successful, and can often miss a sensor in the early stages of failure.
Bit of a moot point in Jay's case if he doesn't have easy access to one or the other though!
Jay, suppose now is as good a time as any to ask what's up with your car? If it's doing something it shouldn't, describing the symptoms may help us to help you pinpoint the cause.
